There really is no such thing as "home schooling." Some folks use tutors or home school teacher co-ops; others, mentors; others, classical or religious curricula. Others "unschool." This site offers a good introduction to the many options other home schooling parents have chosen.
Although this site is put together by the University of Oregon, its scholarly overview of home schooling applies nationwide.
According to this study recap, homeschooled students average 4 grade levels above their institutionally-schooled counterparts by grade 8.
One of the reasons parents homeschool is that the institutional approach is producing children who can't read (or don't, which results in the same diminished quality of life). This recent government report is an eye-opener.
