"I’ve been using Diigo since last week’s news that Yahoo was threatening to “sunset” Delicious. After several days use, I’ve found Diigo to be a worthy replacement for Delicious. In some ways, Diigo is what Delicious should have become if Yahoo had not let Delicious languish. On the other hand, there are still a few gaps in Diigo’s features.

I know that others are looking for a Delicious replacement. To help you in that process, I’d like to offer my early impressions of Diigo."

"Dropbox is a popular solution for syncing your files across all of your PCs and even your smartphone. It’s useful for both personal and business purposes and you can even use it for free with up to 2GB of storage.

One common use of Dropbox is securely sharing files with others using simple web links. Rather than email that 12MB presentation to 3 separate people, you just send the Dropbox link.

A little known feature is that Dropbox provides a RSS link to the list of changes (adding, removing, etc.) you make. If you are using Dropbox to share project files with a team, if they simply subscribe to the RSS feed no extra notification is needed. They can pull the files from Dropbox directly from their feed reader"

"For 24 hours after the news leaked Yahoo said nothing – in spite of endless angry appeals for information from worried Delicious users. On Friday they confirmed that while "there is not a strategic fit at Yahoo, we believe there is an ideal home for Delicious outside of the company". But is it too late to save it and who would want to buy it now? Trust has been eroded and a mass exodus is underway as users exchange tips on how to export their bookmarks and move to other social bookmarking sites. Users have woken up to the fact that information is precious and that there are innovative alternatives like Pinboard and Diigo exist – that alone could spell disaster for Delicious.
Commentators writing on the influential TechCrunch blog accuse Yahoo of a lack of innovation and say the company is in "absolute disarray", a point echoed by one former Yahoo employee Jon Orlin, who says: "When you have 'the biggest collection of bookmarks in the universe' in a potentially very social product and you can't figure out how to run it in a lean, innovative and profitable way, it's a real sign you are in trouble." All of which leaves Delicious users feeling let down and anything but delicious."

    • It's one of the best-loved online tools, so why has Yahoo neglected its social bookmarking service Delicious?

"the purpose of this wiki is to provide a home for community contributions from across Europe, to create a dynamic and updatable picture of open access activity in the EU.

Elsewhere on the wiki are pages dedicated to individual countries. This page is intended to provide an area where general topics can be developed.

Below are the topics we felt would be of interest to the community. As the wiki and this page develop we will add additional topics to reflect growing areas of interest. Do contact us with your suggestions http://helpdesk.driver.research-infrastructures.eu
    DRIVER Guidelines

The DRIVER Guidelines were developed based on the DINI certification in Germany and DARE guidelines in the Netherlands with requirements specific to those networks removed. DRIVER partners involved in other repository networks, such as HAL in France and SHERPA in the UK, provided additional input to ensure that the DRIVER Guidelines are suitable for implementation by the entire European repository community. The DRIVER Guidelines are available from the Support website. A Wiki has been set up for the DRIVER Guidelines where you may contribute. "

"Bing has received a good deal of coverage for its integration of Facebook Likes into search results. In its Bing Search Summit last week, Microsoft said that Likes will influence ranking and create more personalized search results over time.

As Microsoft’s Satya Nadella said, it’s “search quality foundationally influenced by the social graph.” Despite its ambitions, Microsoft is being somewhat cautious in its roll out so far. Many people, including me, have seen very limited integration and continue to have difficulty finding “Liked” results on Bing.

By contrast, search startup Blekko is taking a much more aggressive approach to integrating the Social Graph data into search. The results are fascinating and point toward a future where social data are as powerful an influence on ranking as any factor — and maybe more."

"With today’s user-generated content overload, tracking your brand mentions is a must. You can consider various free and paid tools or services that offer to track buzz around your brand, but there are three most basic tools that you should use no matter what.

The three tools below are free, easy to use, have rather basic functionality and deliver email alerts of your brand mentions."

    • Tracking Web Mentions: Google Alerts
    • Tracking Social Media Mentions: SocialMention

"I’m constantly trying to discover better bookmarking services. Evernote and Diigo are two very capable and excellent tools I’ve learned to love over time. The respective iOS apps leave something to be desired however, as they won’t save all items for offline use on my iPod Touch. Thus, I was prompted to search for another bookmarking system, and found that RSS feeds may just be the next best thing.

I was highly tempted to try using Twitter Lists as my new RSS reader, but I’m not so fond of being able to only see the title and having to click on the links for the actual post that will load with distracting ads. If you’re looking for a service that just works and is minimalist without sacrificing features, Google Reader may just be the answer."

"This is the title of a session I gave at this year's Online Inormation Conference at Olympia, London on 1 December 2010.It is a rather different topic to my usual concerns, being an overview of the problem of trying to define how libraries can get value out of social media."
