Izmir Übel's List: Recommended Firefox 2 Add-ons

  • Sep 10, 11

    About this Add-on

Bookmark Sync and Sort is a Mozilla Firefox extension that lets you connect to an FTP/WebDAV server and synchronize your bookmarks that are stored in an XML file. Setup is easy; just write in your FTP/WebDAV server address, username, password and a name for the XML file (by default called xbel.xml). To start, press Upload to create the file on the server and set if you want to automatically download the file on startup or sort and upload it when you close your browser. Based off of DougB's Bookmark Synchronizer 3 and Torisugari's Sort Bookmarks

"SortPlaces" is a good sorting substitute for "Bookmark Sync and Sort," for Firefox 3

by Warren H. Chang, Jr. on August 8, 2009

If all you want to do is to alphabetize your bookmarks, then "SortPlaces" is a good substitute for the sorting feature in "Bookmarks Sync and Sort." . After installing 'SortPlaces', check your "Bookmarks" pull-down in Firefox, and you'll see a new selection, "Sort Bookmarks." It has a variety of different types of "Options" you can select, for sorting bookmarks. Take note that the only problem I found with this add-on, is when you launch it, a small pop-up window will appear giving you the status of the sorting process. If your Firefox 3 browser has a lot of bookmarks that need to be sorted, the sorting process will appear to slow down or freeze up. If after a few minutes the pop-up window does not change its status message, click the "Cancel" button, then check if the alphabetical sorting operation was successful in your bookmarks. Most times, the operation to sort was successful... but the pop-up window does not auto-exit after it is done. This is the only problem I've found with the 'SortPlaces' add-on. But to reiterate, if all you need to do is to alphabetize your bookmarks, then this is a 'good' substitute (I didn't say it was "the best," though) for 'Bookmark Sync and Sort' for Firefox 3. (If you can find a better sorter, share it with us).

"This Extension allows you to create, use and manage your own Google Custom Search Engines right from within Firefox.

Once you create these engines you decide which websites are covered and which not, how they rank and so on. If you don't change anything, your Google Custom Search Engine will be more or less a normal Google Search.

You can integrate your own favourite search engines into Google using customizable refinements - so, if you would for example like to search craigslist from within google with just a single click, go ahead and integrate it if you wish so.

Another new option is to add rewrite refinement labels - these can for example be used to exclude all shopping related searchterms from a search - with a single click from your Google Custom Search results.

Once created, the Google Custom Search Engines can be used by anyone - no login required. They can easily be integrated into your own website or blog.

This is an inofficial Addon. It is neither provided nor endorsed by Google. Google Custom Search is a service officially provided by Google which allows anyone to create customized Google Search Engines."

Stylish allows easy management of user styles. User styles empower your browsing experience by letting you fix ugly sites, customize the look of your browser or mail client, or just have fun. With an online repository at userstyles.org, you don't even need to know how to write styles yourself; just a couple clicks and the chosen style is applied. Stylish is to CSS what Greasemonkey is to JavaScript, and unlike other methods of using user styles, most styles take effect immediately.

After installing Personal Menu, "Menus Toolbar" is available in Toolbar Context Menu, and you may hide it to save the space of browser. Then you may open Personal Menu Option panel to gather all useful commands into "Menu Button", and pleace it wherever you want; or you may add the items you want in Toolbar Context Menu.\n\nWhen Menus Toolbar is hidden, although you may add "Bookmarks" and "History" inside Menu Button, it become inconvenient to access them. Therefore, here are also "Bookmarks Button" and "History Button". You may also set what happens after you middle / right-click on them, like open Bookmarks Sidebar after middle-clicking Bookmarks Button, and Undo Close Tab after right-clicking History Button.

Smarky lets you manage your Simpy bookmarks in firefox from a sidebar, menu, toolbar, and a quick search dialog.

Diigo users note that you can setup Diigo to automatically pass all bookmarks to Simpy. This gives you not only a backup for all your precious bookmark information, but also gives you direct access to your bookmarks. I find Smarky faster and easier to use than Diigo Sidebar > My Bookmarks > filter for fast access to bookmarks.

Smarky and Simpy let you access the same set of bookmarks anywhere with an internet connection.
The quick search searches only the bookmark details, can be opened with the Home+Home key combo, and looks similar to Google Desktop's Ctrl+Ctrl search. The standard search in the sidebar or organize window pulls its results from simpy.com

Smarky supports nested labels with a customizable separator. It has a toolbar button which turns yellow when the page is bookmarked and when middle clicked can add/remove the site. There are also two toolbar buttons which can be used to add a bookmark to Simpy. Smarky also adds a tab to the Firefox add bookmark window(opened via Ctrl+D) to add bookmarks directly to Simpy.com

Also included are filters, which can be used for both batch editing and for automatically adding descriptions and labels to new bookmarks, and an Organize (Simpy) Bookmarks window with inline editing of bookmarks.

Simpy and Smarky allow for easy migration to and from the service, allowing you to import and export your bookmarks from the site. Smarky is completely separate from your Firefox bookmarks and does not remove or hide them.
