• I'd recommend choosing a project that you're going to do. Do not pick "create a blog" or whatever, choose a real project that you want to see happen. Then read a book like Agile Web Dev with Rails and try to code following the examples and tutorials.

    

  Do not hesitate to spend time to entirely refactor your code to improve what you did. You WILL find out that you did everything wrong and have to redo 50% of your code. It's impossible to get it totally right the first time.

• Ruby has a read/eval/print/loop that will do everything you need to learn the language. Think of BASH or Python. You jump into the interpreter to run some code, seeing how it will execute, then when you’re satisfied, you commit the code to the program.
• Stick with the Ruby docs, a basic text editor like Vim or Emacs, and the Ruby interpreter.
• I don’t use an IDE with Ruby or RoR. I use Ruby heavily at work and I use Rails pretty heavily in my free time. I use VIM with the bufferlist.vim script and that’s honestly about it.

• There are currently two kinds of Vim for Macintosh: 

   
  • Using the Cocoa GUI. Also known as MacVim. This is the latest and is  being actively developed. This behaves like a Mac application.
   
  • Using the Carbon GUI. This is an older way of doing things and isn't updated much any more. This behaves more like Vim on Unix.

• MacVim has more a Mac look and feel, is developed actively and most people prefer this version. Most of MacVim was made by Björn Winckler.

   New versions are made quite often. Subscribe to the vim-mac maillist to be informed about bugs and updates.
