    LISTSERV 15.5 - CELTIC-L Archives

    • Clothing for the early Irish of all ages and sexes consisted of a linen or in some cases silk tunic (the leine) and a four-cornered or oval cloak (the'brat') worn over it
    • The brat was an  outer garment that was attached to the breast by a  brooch
    • While descriptions of the brat vary most agree  that it was a multicoloured piece of rectangular  cloth, very similar to a short cape that dropped to  mid-thigh

Reason for 503BC as start, and 30 years as ages, of the Coligny Calendar

    • Now when at intervals of thirty years the star of Cronus, which we call 'Splendent' but they, our author said, call 'Night-watchman', enters the sign of the Bull, they, having spent a long time in preparation for the sacrifice and the expedition, choose by lot and send forth a sufficient number of envoys in a correspondingly sufficient number of ships ... while those who have served the god together for the stint of thirty years are allowed to sail off home
    • That the Celts used the first-quarter moon as the first day of their months explains why their period of the day extends from successive sunsets: on the first day of the Celtic month the moon is directly overhead split into dual sunlit and dark halves, a precise astronomical observation
