• The answer. They're both examples of a worldwide phenomenon that is changing the way people -- and ultimately businesses -- develop ideas.
• Collaborative Innovation Networks (COINs) are online communities of like-minded people working together to create innovations. Author and scientist Peter Gloor originated the term. He describes it as a "cyberteam of self-motivated people with a collective vision."
• These cyberteams are cropping up everywhere, unified not only by their "collective vision" but by the giant tentacles of the Internet.
• If you're not convinced, he says, take a look at what COINs have already accomplished -- the creation of the World Wide Web itself is the most obvious example
• ButGloor, who is from Switzerland, is not simply a delighted observer of the phenomenon. He was part of the network that helped develop hypertext -- online text that links to other text, like this. He worked with a hardcore of around 100 people worldwide, most of whom he never met and who worked on the project in their own time, and for little or no reward.
• "Most of the innovation that you see on the Internet today was given away for nothing," he says. "People did it for the sheer love of it."
• This fraternal, almost unworldly attitude is a common feature of many COINs. For the network to be successful, contributors have to operate transparently and be willing to share their knowledge.
• Of course the idea of working collaboratively to create innovations is not new. Taking just one example, the development of much of modern physics (from quantum theory to the creation of the atom bomb) owes its success to teamwork. The Manhattan Project, for example, employed more than 130,000 people at over thirty different sites across North America and Europe.

• Procter and Gamble, the world's biggest maker of household goods, made a commitment in 2001 to source half of all new innovations from outside of the company. It set up 'Connect + Develop', an initiative that allows people to submit new innovations online.

  The venture has been so successful that P&G now gets 42 percent of all its new technologies from outside sources.

• Why is mass online collaboration useful in solving mathematical problems? Part of the answer is that even the best mathematicians can learn a great deal from people with complementary knowledge, and be stimulated to consider ideas in directions they wouldn’t have considered on their own. Online tools create a shared space where this can happen, a short-term collective working memory where ideas can be rapidly improved by many minds. These tools enable us to scale up creative conversation, so connections that would ordinarily require fortuitous serendipity instead happen as a matter of course. This speeds up the problem-solving process, and expands the range of problems that can be solved by the human mind.
• There is a power in the intelligence of groups that I think is sorely underestimated. Indeed, one of the criticisms of the Nobel Prizes in the sciences is that important work is generally done by research teams – not individuals, but the rules still provide that no more than three people be rewarded.
• When people discuss decision making and innovation, we have a tendency to focus on individuals, like Steve Jobs and Thomas Edison, and they have a tendency to forget that those individuals were often working in collaboration with a variety of different people and groups. It’s small teams of people, working on common goals, that truly drive discovery, invention, and innovation.
• That’s the power of group intelligence – two heads are better than one, especially when they harness more than one computer.
• All cultures together, one human society, connected online, working together. Yes, despite the economy. Yes, despite the environment. Yes, despite all of the other myriad problems we face.
• That’s because we have at our disposal the greatest tool for problem solving in history – human minds that can collaborate with each other no matter where they are located.

Voluntary contributions by large numbers of users and co-producers lead to new forms of production and innovation, as seen in Wikipedia, open source software development, in social networks or on user-generated content platforms as well as in many firm-driven Web 2.0 services. Large-scale collaboration on the Internet is an intriguing phenomenon for scholarly debate because it challenges well established insights into the governance of economic action, the sources of innovation, the possibilities of collective action and the social, legal and technical preconditions for successful collaboration. Online meetings also save the small business and the client travel expenses and time. When the business saves money, the savings can be passed on to the client. A client that knows he is getting a fair rate for services is a happy client.
• Also consider combining online collaboration with telecommuting. Document sharing is a terrific way to work with employees who do not make it into the office frequently. Anyone can create a project at their convenience and post it through Google Docs or Box.net and other teammates can comment and revise the work at their convenience. When collaborative sessions no longer require group scheduling, project completion times become shortened. Once again, saving time means saving money.

(Licenses for more attendees is possible and equally affordable.) There are many applications available for online collaboration with similar features. We like the award-winning GoToMeeting because it is developed by Citrix. This means the price is reasonable, the feature-set is high, and the ease of use is extraordinary. Plus, you get phone support whenever you want it – which you don’t need very often! Also, when anyone in your meeting first signs on, the small bit of software that gets downloaded does not mess up the computer nor does it take up a lot of space. Because of the way it is built, it is readily accepted in high-security sites including most Federal agencies.

• Collaborative learning in an online classroom can take the form of discussion among the whole class or within smaller groups. This paper addresses the latter, examining first whether assessment makes a difference to the level of learner participation and then considering other factors involved in creating effective collaborative learning groups. Data collected over a three year period (15 cohorts) from the Foundations course in the Master of Distance Education (MDE) program offered jointly by University of Maryland University College (UMUC) and the University of Oldenburg does not support the authors’ original hypothesis that assessment makes a significant difference to learner participation levels in small group learning projects and leads them to question how much emphasis should be placed on grading work completed in study groups to the exclusion of other strategies.

• Drawing on observations of two MDE courses, including the Foundations course, their extensive online teaching experience, and a review of the literature, the authors identify factors other than grading that contribute positively to the effectiveness of small collaborative learning groups in the online environment.  In particular, the paper focuses on specific instructional strategies that facilitate learner participation in small group projects, which result in an enhanced sense of community, increased skill acquisition, and better learning outcomes.

• Different learning styles and cultures can be accommodated more easily because effective collaborative learning values diversity (Palloff & Pratt, 2005). Further, skills gained from the experience of collaborative learning are highly transferable to team-based work environments (Shaw, 2006). Chapman, Ramondt, and Smiley (2005) also establish a strong link between building effective online communities and deeper learning and confirm that “... the world of work requires that learners can apply, analyse, synthesise and evaluate information...” (p. 220).  Despite these documented benefits and the intense popularity of informal social networking using web 2.0 tools and mobile devices, collaborative learning in the form of small groups (four to six peers), which is not of their own choosing, is often dreaded and avoided by online learners.

  A blog is a webpage that is easily edited.  Additionally, depending upon permissions, readers can comment on the entries posted by the author(s).  While blogs have been traditionally used as online diaries and for political commentary, classroom teachers have begun using blogs to post classroom assignments and update parents on school events.  Some teachers use blogs for literature responses, to collect student opinions about content area learning topics, and as a reflection tool. In our experience, using a classroom blog invites and extend a cooperative classroom dialog.  Use of a blog promotes learning in the classroom and beyond.  The educational possibilities are endless. • Another benefit to online collaboration is that it helps conserve physical space. Sometimes it makes sense for a company to hold a meeting online rather than in a physical location. If a company or department meeting has a lot of participants, it can be a challenge to find a room large enough for everyone. With very large groups, it's also difficult to control participation. Online meeting spaces can be an attractive alternative to cramming a room with disengaged employees.
• Another benefit of online collaboration is that it can make team projects easier to manage. For example, imagine you're in charge of a product department at an electronics company. You need to submit a report about a proposed product to your boss. You've decided to include information from multiple departments in your report, including marketing, sales, and research and development (R&D). A good online collaboration system could make it much easier to generate a report than a traditional approach.
• Each department could submit information to a centralized data storage system. The marketing department could share research on what customers say they want and recent market trends in the industry. Sales could submit information about customer purchases to help you decide how to price the new product. And research and development could report on potential features and functions. You could even assemble the report in this shared space and let other departments review it to ensure accuracy.
• For companies willing to partner with competitors, online collaboration can sometimes reduce the costs of doing business. Some people call collaboration between competitors "co-opetition," a combination of the words cooperation and competition.
