Explanation of how the C source code is generated for Squeak Virtual Machines.
the squeak.org repository of unofficial debian packages
Great news (though sad that the project lost touch with so many contributors who undoubtedly would have be glad to relicense)
Getting all of these right is vital to make a distribution package that doesn't surprise users or fail in frustrating ways.
This is a (potentially) horrible situation. It is amazing that my images mostly seem to put files in sensible places, so perhaps Bert did some work on Etoys since this posting, perhaps I got lucky, or perhaps Bert's launch scripts deal with this well enough.
This is the Squeak Foundation's repository for packages compatible with Debian Linux. It is maintained by Matej Kosik http://www.altair.sk/mediawiki/index.php/Matej_Kosik , and is currently much more comprehensive than the repositories at Debian or Ubuntu. Currently Matej's squeak-vm package is used by Ubuntu, but Ubuntu's etoys package comes from Debian (by Jose L. Redrejo Rodriguez.) See the instructions at http://wiki.squeak.org/squeak/3616 to install these with apt/synaptic/aptitude . If you prefer to download debs manually from this site, look particularly at http://ftp.squeak.org/debian/dists/unstable/main/binary-i386/devel/ for the VM, at http://ftp.squeak.org/debian/dists/unstable/non-free/binary-all/games/ for the etoys image, and at http://ftp.squeak.org/debian/dists/unstable/main/binary-all/devel/ for a wide selection of images. (The Debian changes files, that dpkg uses to keep track of upgrades, are here: http://ftp.squeak.org/debian/dists/unstable/installed/ )

This hasn't changed since Hardy - it needs updating (not least to fix the xshm bug in Etoys.)
An explanation of a community process for collaborating between 2 distributions.
Today (mid 2009) this is much newer than the VM in Ubuntu universe. It seems the Ubuntu MOTU team did not pay much attention to this.

outline for making a patched deb package
Again I wonder if there is a reason why Ubuntu package squeak-vm in this way. Also it only contains a small selection of plugins, neglecting several that are appropriate for Etoys. (perhaps they are packaged separately.)
