A teacher blog describing her approach to creating a research based lesson without discriminating students who may not have access to technology outside of school.

    • I would never ask a student in front of the class whether or not they have a computer at home, nor would I assume everyone had one.
    • The students would be given in class computer time to work on Internet sources, and would be assigned to research books outside of class.

Edutopia article expressing concern about how digital access has changed and continues to change.  How will schools keep up?  How are students being effected?

    • The term digital divide was coined in the mid-1990s as a way to
describe the gap in equity between those who have access to computers and the Internet and those who do not.
    • Students who are excluded from the digital universe know exactly what they're missing, according to Deloney. "They know they're not getting the homework help that everyone else is; they know they're not getting that discount textbook or taking classes to further their degrees."

Pew Internet & American Life Product article addressing statistical trends, surveyed data, and implications of technology in the classroom and at home.

    • These teachers see disparities in access to digital tools having at least some impact on their students. More than half (54%) say all or almost all of their students have sufficient access to digital tools at school, but only a fifth of these teachers (18%) say all or almost all of their students have access to the digital tools they need at home.
    • In terms of community type, teachers in urban areas are the least likely to say their students have sufficient access to digital tools IN SCHOOL, while rural teachers are the least likely to say their students have sufficient access AT HOME.

eSchool News article from 2008 discussing legitimate goals to close the digital gap.  A different tone and perspective that addresses a deeper concern within America's technology availability.  Societal and economical topics are discussed.

    • "The digital divide is traditionally defined in terms of internet access," he said, "but it is really part of a broader divide that contributes to the social and economic exclusion of people."
    • In other words, closing the so-called digital divide is about much more than providing access to computers and the internet, he said; it’s about providing all the opportunities for learning that technology affords.

Ki Mae Heussner reviews the SXSWedu ed tech conference in Austin, TX.  The conference lacked educational leaders and urgency to address a widening technological gap.

    • Technology (especially mobile) is marching its way into communities across the country. But, obviously, that doesn’t mean penetration, quality and connectivity are evenly distributed.
    •  Assistant Deputy Secretary for Innovation and Improvement Jim Shelton cautioned the crowd to be mindful of the potential for technology to exacerbate the gap between kids in richer and poorer communities.

Review of the laws behind digital equity, particular gaps (age, gender, geography), and what needs to happen next.

    • Foremost are the effects of the "digital divide." Many teachers I work with each semester wonder how social technology would ever relate to their assignments in cash-strapped Baltimore schools. So, we spend a semester reimagining funding and policy. Last year, one of my students persuaded his principal to let him pilot a tablet program with money that otherwise would have been spent on a more expensive desktop computer lab. Andrew Coy, a teacher at the Digital Harbor High School, has turned an unused room and a few computers into a new media center. But individually, teachers can only do so much.
    • The "access divide" is marked by the blocking of access to the very heart of what resources are available on the Internet, including YouTube, blogs, new media and anywhere a student might actually read a comment. This tends to derive from a ham-fisted approach to digital safety. At a public school conference recently, I found myself struggling to rearrange my live-web multimedia slides because so many were blocked by the district filter.
