    • · What is disruptive innovation? A disruptive innovation is an unexpected impact to a business or system caused by a contender who appears at first to present little competition, but eventually shifts the trends from the original product/service/system to a new, frequently more simple and less expensive one. (Christensen, Johnson, & Horn, 2010)
      • Tammy Tuell's response to discussion 1 questions.

    • · How does it come about? Disruptive innovators often focus on meeting need or wants of a group that are non-consumers and finding a way to make them into consumers. (Christensen, Johnson, & Horn, 2010) Since these new consumers are not already accustomed to the approach of the contending company or system, they are far more willing to accept a product that lacks the “bells and whistles.” (Monday, 2009) Disruption can also be accomplished by changing the business model from one form to another, (Christensen, Johnson, & Horn, 2010) such as transforming the service stations of the 1950’s – a solution shop style business with well trained mechanics that also happened to sell gasoline – to the modern self-serve stations that operate with a VAP business model simply providing the resource of gas but at a lower price than the full service station could ever hope to match.

Rather than focus on a solution itself, Apple looks for answers to the most natural way we want to resolve challenges using technology. Hence, their intuitive mashup APIs and the innovative use of gestures on screens, touch-pads, and mice.

Technologies center on communication and transportation because we are mobile and social creatures. This is an important principle to keep in mind.

    • The history of the network is a story about communications. In the late 19th century, the railroads began connecting cities and towns throughout the world. Today, the global digital network gives news definitions to space and time.

In this new space, we are entering the realm of the virtual. The virtual network is becoming the standard that many enterprises are adopting as the performance requirements increase and the need to optimize is driven by costs and competitive pressures.

    The coming disruption...
Groups are building experimental networks on top of dormant channels called “dark fiber.” And what they plan to test may turn out to be as disruptive to our lives and society as the first version of the Internet.
