It works! I have a gateway MT6821 laptop with the 945GM chipset, and had the same symptoms as 29Dodo. My hangups would usually last about 2 minutes and I had the same other symptoms. I don't seem to remember this happening when I briefly installed the public beta version. I believe I have the ICH7M controller.
Anyway, I installed the matrix storage manager from the intel.com site, and have used the computer extensively for several hours and no more hangups!

This problem was caused by a compatibility issue between Windows Vista and
Texas Instruments PCIxx12 Integrated FlashMedia Controller.
Texas Instruments PCIxx12 Integrated FlashMedia Controller is usually
distributed by the company that manufactured your device or computer. -
The Texas Instruments program was drivers for your computer's built-in
card reader and you need to reinstall the drivers. If you got a drivers
disk with the computer, the TI drivers will be on it. Otherwise go to
the computer mftr.'s tech support website for your specific model
machine and download the drivers from there.

Microsoft will only allow the following upgrade paths to Vista users. For example, users who purchase an upgrade copy of Windows 7 Professional and have Vista Home Premium will only be able to perform a clean install. Here's the migration list:

Clean installs will require about 16GB for the installation process. Unless the user chooses to repartition or format the current partition, Vista's files from C:\WINDOWS will be preserved under C:\WINDOWS.OLD, just as when upgrading from XP to Vista. Clean installs will also have to be performed when upgrading from a 32-bit version to a 64-bit version.

The 990C driver is considered as a universal driver for HP...Just try using that one, maybe that should do the trick.
