People of African and Asian origin have lived in Britain for at least two thousand years. But this aspect of our heritage has been largely forgotten. By presenting a selection of relevant records held by The National Archives and other sources, the Black Presence exhibition aims to reclaim some of this history and make it more widely known.
People from our community have been promoting our arts and culture for many years. Examples can be traced to Berry Edwards in Manchester (Caribbean Week in the 70s), or Eric and Jessica Huntley from Ealing who regularly organised a Caribbean week in the late 70s and early 80's, or Alex Pascall who established, on BBC Radio London, the Black Londoners radio programme which went from a monthly, to a weekly, and then to a daily programme.
This site seeks to support the grassroots celebration of our heritage.

Over the past eight years six museums across the UK have worked in partnership to share expertise, develop resources, training opportunities and school sessions.
For more than 200 years Britain was at the heart of a lucrative transatlantic trade in millions of enslaved Africans. But by 1807 the practice had been banned. How did this happen?
