The Levitation Ale from Stone Brewing Company in Escondido, CA pours out a mahogany brown with amber hues, good clarity and a foamy, light tan head that dissipates to a film after a good while. On the nose this ale is quite hoppy with both pine and citrus backed by caramel, malty goodness and fresh, whole wheat bread.
Poured into a snifter, it has a hazy orange-amber hue with a short-lived cream-coloured head. No sign of bubbles. Aroma of orangey citrus, sweet, candyish malt, and alcohol.
The Obsidian Stout from Deschutes Brewery in Bend, OR pours out an opaque, jet black with a large, foamy, tan head that hangs around then reduces to a quarter inch espresso cream like film. On the nose aromas of roasted grains, roasted coffee beans, dark, bitter chocolate and malt.
The Amber Ale from Napa Smith Brewery in Napa, CA pours out a reddish brown with very nice clarity and a small off white head. On the nose aromas of caramel, honey and bready malts abound with just the slightest hint of hops. In the mouth the caramel flavor comes first with hints of honey following to the end.
The Hop Stoopid Ale (Imperial IPA) from Lagunitas Brewing Company in Petaluma, CA pours out dark gold in color with crystal clear clarity and a foamy white head that dissipates to a film fairly quickly. On the nose (wow, this is nice) tons of citrus - orange, grapefruit, tangerine, lemon - along with pine and some floral and sweet malt notes.
The Hairy Eyeball from Lagunitas Brewing Company in Petaluma, CA is an America Strong Ale. The Eyeball pours out a deep brown in color with reddish hues, nice clarity and a tan, fairly tightly woven head. Malty molasses on the nose with some dried dark fruit and a little hoppiness.
