The article discusses Arthur Conan Doyle's use of body language in his Sherlock Holmes stories. It states that Doyle uses body language as against the verbal language to prove how to identify the truth when words seem deceptive. It also mentions Doyle's book "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle," wherein eye contact was used to identify the criminal's real identity.

    • K is for kinesics, which in the study of linguistics means the analysis of how body movements can communicate meaning.  As a writer this is something that we must learn how to use as well as we use dialogue to communicate characterization, mood and tone.
    • Kinesic analysis examines what is communicated through body movement. This approach is based on the assumption that all human beings, although they may be unaware of it, act and react to situations nonverbally as well as verbally. Kinesics can be especially useful when employed in conjunction with other qualitative methods such as interviews and narratives to triangulate data. Kinesics must be used thoughtfully and carefully, as movements and gestures can be easily misinterpreted and presenting findings without giving context renders the data useless (Marshall & Rossman, 1995).
    • In composition, the placing of verbal elements side by side, leaving it up to the reader to establish connections and impose a meaning.
    • These verbal elements (words, clauses, sentences) may be drawn from different sources and juxtaposed to form a literary collage.

      Definition:

Juxtaposition is a literary device wherein the author places a person, concept, place, idea or theme parallel to another. The purpose of juxtaposing two directly or indirectly related entities close together in literature is to highlight the contrast between the two and compare them. This literary device is usually used for etching out a character in detail, creating suspense or lending a rhetorical effect.

      Example:

In Paradise Lost, Milton has used juxtaposition to draw a parallel between the two protagonists, Satan and God, who he discusses by placing their traits in comparison with one another to highlight their differences.
