Cole Bakeman's List: Lunchroom Dangers

  • Introduction

Obesity in America has been an issue acknowledged for several years and never truly addressed. Now it is spreading rapidly through the nation's adolescent community and negatively impacting their health as well as their learning abilities. Many people lie blame on fast food or video games. Others lie blame on genetics and claim that because of parent's are obese the children will be to. Although many overlook the fact that the issue may becoming from a very unexpected source. Our Schools.

This list contains sources that show several aspects of obesity in America's children. The AACAP gives an abstract definition of obesity and explains that it is not just a couple extra pounds but a sever issue and is an extreme case of extra pounds. Other sources show that attempts to improve this have been made but are not completely successful while others such as Lets Move by Michelle Obama provide info as well as plans to help combat obesity in the adolescent. Many people believe that causes such as inactivity are a major factor but there is research that proves as it may contribute it is not a major cause as well as another source that proves genetic testing for obesity is inaccurate.

Jaime, Patricia C., and Karen Lock. "Do School Based Food and Nutrition Policies Improve Diet and Reduce Obesity?" ScienceDirect. Web. 25 Feb. 2011.

Jaime and Lock suggest that some school policies are successful while others are not. They support these claims by giving research from multiple studies on school programs. They write this so that schools can see which programs are working and which ones are a waste of money. They write in a formal tone for the scientific community as well as for school leaders.

This is a peer reviewed article written by to researchers. They use a multitude of studies on several different programs to get a diverse yet controlled study. I see myself using this because it contains evidence to show that programs for school lunches do work but it also shows that they do not work all of the time.

    C. Barr Taylor, et al. "Does Television Viewing Increase Obesity and Reduce Physical Activity? Cross-sectional and longitudinal Analyses Among Adolescent Girls." Pediatrics 91.2 (1993): 273. Health Source - Consumer Edition. EBSCO.

Taylor Barr, in her essay "Does Television Viewing Increase Obesity and Reduce Physical Activity? Cross-sectional and longitudinal Analyses Among Adolescent Girls" (1993), claims that watching T.V. does not effect obesity in girls. She supports this claim by studying multiple girls from different schools, using a wide base of ethnicity and different locations to help diversify her research. The author's purpose is to show that watching to much t.v. is not the cause of obesity so that the search is continued to discover the cause. She writes in a scientific format because the essay is based off research performed to discover whether watching T.V. was the cause of obesity or not.

This is a peer reviewed article written off of research from studies that have been performed. The studies include girls from northern California from several different schools. The study was controlled within an age limit but at the same time was diversified in several different ways such as ethnicity. I foresee myself using this because it disproves many people's ideas about what causes obesity and thus helps support the fact that unhealthy lunches at school are a cause.

Chen, Grace. "How Diet and Nutrition Impact a Child's Learning Ability
    - Public School Review." Public School Review - Profiles of USA Public
    Schools. 20 June 2008. Web. 03 Feb. 2011.

Grace Chen, in her article "How Diet and Nutrition Impact a Child's Learning Ability" (2008), she explains how unhealthy foods affect the learning abilities of children. Chen describes how foods affect the body's behavior particular saturated fats negative effect, then she gives her own plan to improve it. The author's purpose is to inform people of how school lunches negatively effect students learning abilities and give a plan to fix it in order to promote a healthier nation. She talks in a former tone so that she can sound professional and have her research taken seriously by peers.

This is an article of the internet and does not have any credentials but does have multiple references listed. She writes formally and does not appear to be a crazy internet user posting false materials. I see myself using this article based on the facts about the effect of food on learning and possibly the plan she provides can be implemented into mine. I can also use her references for my own good.

"Learn the Facts | Let's Move | The Epidemic of Childhood Obesity." Let's Move. Web. 03 Feb. 2011. <http://www.letsmove.gov/learnthefacts.php>.

On the website "Lets Move" Michelle Obama provides information on how obesity is becoming an overwhelming issue. Mrs. Obama has provided information on why obesity is such an issue and how America has gotten to the point where it is. Her purpose is to increase the awareness of this issue and provide solutions to help aid in the cure. The website is written in a simple, yet informative tone so that kids can understand but still provides the facts for adults.

This is a website provided by the government. The program was started by Michelle Obama so it has alot of credibility. Not only does it provide information on obesity that I can use to show why it is an issue it also provides solutions that I can use in my final part. I am currently considering having the school join the movement as part of my plan of action.

Segal, Mary E., Pamela Sankar, and Danielle R. Reed. "Research Issues in Genetic Testing of Adolescents for Obesity." Nutrition Reviews 62.8 (2004): 307-320. Health Source - Consumer Edition. EBSCO. Web.

in the article "Research Issues in Genetic Testing of Adolescents for Obesity," Segal claims that genetic testing for obesity in children is inaccurate. She supports these claims by explaining how genetic testing is still not developed enough to be accurate and contains many glitches like all new technology. Her purpose is to explain that this testing can not be relied on and outcomes different from the results can occur. It is written in a scholarly tone to fit within the scientific community and be acknowledged.

This article has been peer reviewed and it is not a secret that genetic testing is still not perfect yet. Although this article goes in depth on how there is little info about what genes would carry obesity. I foresee myself using this to disprove the theory that obesity is genetically transmitted and can not be changed.

Alon Eliakim, et al. "Short- and Long-Term Beneficial Effects of a Combined Dietary-Behavioral-Physical Activity Intervention for the Treatment of Childhood Obesity." Pediatrics 115.4 (2005): e443-e449. Health Source - Consumer Edition. EBSCO.

In the article "Short- and Long-Term Beneficial Effects of a Combined Dietary-Behavioral-Physical Activity Intervention for the Treatment of Childhood Obesity," Alon asses the benefits of changing diets and activities of kids with obesity. Alon supports these claims by using evidence from a study performed for this article to show the effects of the intervention. The author's purpose is to show that the methods being used are effective in combating childhood obesity. The article is written in a sophisticated tone filled with lots of data for the fact that it is a research based article and is required to show lots of evidence to achieve credibility.

This is a peer reviewed article written by multiple people. The article was written after they performed a study to see if the methods chosen were effective in combating childhood obesity. I foresee myself using this because it provides evidence that has been confirmed that dietary intervention positively effects obesity.

Carmona, Richard H. "The Obesity Crisis in America." Address.
    Surgeongeneral.gov. 8 Jan. 2007. Web. 2 Feb. 2011.

Surgeon General Carmona, in his testimony before the Subcommittee on Education Reform, claims that Adults need to set examples for the children and teach them healthy life styles. Carmona explains that changing lunches are not enough but that by setting an example the kids will have something to follow and be less susceptible to obesity. The author's purpose is to persuade adults to make healthy choices so that kids have examples to follow. Carmona talks in a very formal tone as he is adressing congressmen about the issue.

This is a speech given by the Surgeon General. He uses personal experience as well as that of other leaders to convey his point. I see myself using this speech because not only does Carmona give facts about obesity but also takes a different approach than many to solve it.

"Obesity In Children And Teens." American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. May 2009. Web. 03 Feb. 2011. <http://www.aacap.org/cs/root/facts_for_families/obesity_in_children_and_teens>.

In the article, "Obesity IN Children and Teens," the AACAP informs about Obesity and it causes. The AACAP supports their claims by defining obesity in an abstract form that is moe appealing to the average person. Their purpose is to give people the true meaning of obesity and inform them on what the causes are and how to contain the issue. They write in a relaxed tone to make the article more appealing to the average person and not scientists.

This article is written by an organization devoted to the heath of children and adolescents. Not only is that their focus but they also write to obtain a more common audience and not only scholarly readers. I see myself using their abstract definition of obesity possibly in the block quote to provide a simple understanding for my readers.

  • Conclusion

Obesity has been an issue for several years now and as time goes on it has only become worse. Now Political figures such as the Surgeon General and The First Lady are determined to end obesity. Over the years tons of research has been conducted to determine the causes and it has been narrowed down to a person's diet being the major cause. This leads to the fact of how many of the nation's children eat at least one meal at school and may be a huge source for the country's adolescent obesity crisis. Michelle Obama has created a program Let's Move that provides multiple steps to help aid in combating obesity. As of now I am considering having Basha join this program as part of my Plan of Action as it is fro, the government and has very concise steps to help. I still would like to find more research that disproves diet as the major cause so I can do my best in fighting obesity. I will be looking for research articles that have studies to back them up.
