Susan Etter's List: Pipeline Programs - Increasing Diversity

    The Corporate Legal Diversity Pipeline Program partners corporate legal departments with nearby, diverse high school law classes in an effort to engage the students, teach them more about civil law, and encourage them to consider careers in the legal profession. This program is a national partnership between Street Law and the Association of Corporate Counsel.

    NJ LEEP was founded in 2006. Executive Director and founder Craig Livermore, a graduate of Columbia Law School, developed the project after working for Legal Outreach, Inc. in Brooklyn. Legal Outreach has successfully worked with urban youth from underserved neighborhoods in Harlem and Brooklyn for twenty-three years. Using law to attract middle school and high school students to academic programs that inspire and motivate them, Legal Outreach has helped disadvantaged youth build the skills, confidence and character they need to achieve their goals.

    The 3Rs Committee provides oversight and direction to the 3Rs -Rights - Responsibilities - Realities, a partnership program with the Cleveland Metropolitan and East Cleveland School Districts. The 3Rs program goals are to improve understanding of and respect for the rule of law and the U.S. Constitution, improve passage of the Ohio Graduation Test, provide practical career counseling to focus students on their potential beyond high school, to improve the "pipeline" of minorities flowing into legal careers in the region. 3Rs program volunteers from the Cleveland legal community visit tenth grade social studies classes throughout the school year. The program, funded by the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Foundation has won national and state awards for its innovation and scope. In addition, the Committee provides oversight and assistance to the annual Cleveland Mock Trial Competition, in partnership with the Cleveland Municipal Court.

    The Delaware Law Related Education Center, Inc. [DELREC], a private nonprofit 501c(3) organization, is a statewide consortium of educators, attorneys, judges, law enforcement officers and other community leaders with a mission to enhance the presence of law-related education initiatives in Delaware. It seeks to promote active learning experiences and skills development for students who need to function in a society based on the rule of law.

    Street Law operates a set of legal diversity pipeline programs—all designed to increase diversity in the legal profession. These programs target high school students of color and work to increase their interest in the law, their knowledge about legal careers and legal career pathways, and encourage them to pursue legal careers.
