"Gamification" was a hot topic for a while, but the hype seems to have subsided somewhat. Programmer dorks are well aware of the power of "badges"... but has it caught on in e-learning?

Representing achievements as badges or trophies is a standard practice in online gaming. Awarding badges has also become a key ingredient in “gamifying” online social media experiences. Social systems such as Foursquare, StackOverflow, and Wikipedia have popularized badges as a way of engaging and motivating users. In this paper we deconstruct badges and present five social psychological functions for badges in social media contexts: goal setting, instruction, reputation, status/affirmation, and group identification. We argue that future research should further explore these five functions and their application in specific contexts.

Badges are doled out for everything from showing up at a particular location or establishment, to revisiting a Website, to sharing your e-mail list, to signing up for a service, to winning a game. This system of rewards appeals because it acknowledges the small efforts and activities of badge recipients by giving them a visible (if not tangible) symbol of their accomplishments and a way to show those off to other community members.

A decade ago, designers discussed the power of the World Wide Web based in the ability for the “mass customization” of content. Yet when we examine online courses as currently developed, we see the presentation of an experience that is the same for each and every student within the same course. Every student progresses through the same discussion forums in the same sequence, answering the same prompts. Every student completes the same assignments, usually in the same calendar-driven sequence. Every student listens to the same podcasts, flips through the same PowerPoint slides, and watches the same video clips assigned by their instructors.
