Edgar Degas, best known for his miniature ballerinas, drew inspiration for his careful sculpting of facial expressions from Darwin’s Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals. And though it’s hard to tie Cezanne’s painting of a cistern to evolutionary theory, the curators give it their best shot: They point to the rock in the background as evidence of a new curiosity about geology. Monet’s 30 successive paintings of the Rouen Cathedral in northwestern France are seen through the lens of natural selection. This nuance bleeds a bit into head-scratching subjectivity.

Many artists work from indeterminate concepts, as opposed to a fixed plan (like mechanical or architectural drawings), so the thinking about the work as it is being made is constantly changing, all the way up until the work is finished, at which point the artist realizes, "That's what I was thinking and doing." Understanding the process usually comes in hindsight, and only matures after many years or decades. Sometimes making another version of it helps you to understand it better, or to fully put it to rest.
A thorough exploration of ideas usually involves taking into consideration every possible aspect to see if they augment or further clarify concepts or ramify into other ideas. Digital transformation is the perfect tool for this process, and I frequently use smartphone apps as "idea projectors".

Obrist is not interested in all art equally. He can be skeptical about painting, because at this point, he told me, it’s difficult to do meaningful work in that medium. For him, art, even old art, must be speaking to something current. “I don’t wake up in the morning and think about Franz Kline,” he said. The art he is most passionate about doesn’t hang on walls and often doesn’t have a permanent emanation. It can take the form of a dance or a game or a science experiment, and often leaves nothing behind but memories and an exhibition catalogue. (Obrist has published more than two hundred catalogues.) He looks for work that responds to the current moment or anticipates the moment after this one—Obrist is obsessed with the not-yet-done. His favorite question is “Do you have any unfinished or unrealized projects?”
