Charles van der Haegen's List: Future of Education

"Waldorf (Steiner) education is a humanistic approach to pedagogy based on the educational philosophy of the Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner, the founder of anthroposophy, which regards the human being as composed of body, soul, and spirit.

Waldorf pedagogy distinguishes three broad stages in child development. The early years education focuses on providing practical, hands-on activities and environments that encourage creative play. In the elementary school, the emphasis is on developing pupils' artistic expression and social capacities, fostering both creative and analytical modes of understanding. Secondary education focuses on developing critical understanding and fostering idealism. Throughout, the approach stresses the role of the imagination in learning and places a strong value on integrating intellectual, practical, and artistic themes."

"The Challenges (and Future) of Networked Learning

    [Sept] 05, 2014
Seminar presentation delivered to , Online, to Medellin, Colombia, via Vidyo.

A conversation about challenges (and future?) of networked learning. A broad understanding of the meaning and potential of networked learning can help educational institutions to rethink their role beyond the provision of LMS and centralized information systems. What skills are needed? What happens if we don't develop them? What kind of technology supports the development of said skills? What’s the relation between this and issues of information property and citizenship in a digital context (POSSE models, Indie web movement)?"

"This position paper explores the ambiguity of technology, toward refined understanding of Educational Technology. The purpose of education is described by John Dewey as growing, or habitual learning. Two philosophical conceptions of technology are reviewed. Dewey positions inquiry as a technology that creates knowledge. Val Dusek offers a “consensus definition,” a systems approach to technology that merges into social construction theory and actor-network theory, both of which emphasize complex relations between humans and technology. Using Dewey and Dusek as reference, literature related to Educational Technology is reviewed. A history of its definitions and conceptions of hard (material) technology and of soft (process) technology are examined. Three brief case studies reveal a bias toward hard technology in contemporary discourse. A misconception that soft technology begins with pre-authenticated knowledge is identified and shown to obscure the reciprocity between technology and the intellect."

See also Stephen downes comments here

"The concept of 'technology' has two facets: one is 'hard' technology, which focuses on the actual tools and hardware. The other is 'soft' technology, which focuses on methods, theories, or practices. This is the basis of AECT's definition of technology, writes Arun Lakhana in this engaging paper. But, "why does the AECT limit their current definition of soft technology to: 'human-made processes that systematically apply scientific knowledge'?" Why, in other words, is it rooted in systems that are, essentially, exclusively a priori and inflexible? "The AECT’s linear model, “input→process→output,” is easy to digest. However, it fails to account for the hidden agentive potential for processes to transform their inputs, as in Dewey’s theory. A more appropriate diagram might not only feedback on itself (connecting output back to input), but feedback also within itself: 'input↔process↔output.'" Quite so. But making this change in itself changes the definition from 'system', which is unidirectional (toward objectives or goals) to 'network' (which does not presume a priori objectives or goals). Anyhow, great paper, engaging, and carefully crafted."

"The price of a year at college has increased by more than 1,200 percent over the last 30 years, far outpacing any other price the government tracks: food, housing, cars, gasoline, TVs, you name it. Tuition has increased at a rate double that of medical care, usually considered the most expensive of human necessities. It has outstripped any reasonable expectation people might have had for investments over the period. And, as we all know, it has crushed a generation of college grads with debt. Today, thanks to those enormous tuition prices, young Americans routinely start adult life with a burden unknown to any previous cohort and whose ruinous effects we can only guess at."

Rob Williams, M.A. and Originator of PSYCH-K, discusses how beliefs determine your biological and behavioral realities and shows how to establish communication with the subconscious to "rewrite the software of the mind" and facilitate change.

PSYCH-K is a simple and direct way to change self-limiting beliefs at the subconscious level of the mind, where nearly all human behavior originates, both constructive and destructive. Its overall goal is to accelerate individual and global spiritual evolution by aligning subconscious beliefs with conscious wisdom from the worlds great spiritual and intellectual traditions.

Rob Williams has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Philosophy from the University of California at Los Angeles and a Masters Degree in Counseling and Personnel Services from the University of Colorado. He is President of The Myrddin Corporation, and Director of the PSYCH-K Centre International. Rob's life-long exploration of human potential, combined with his background in marketing, advertising, business management -- and 14 years in private practice as a psychotherapist -- provides a practical, results-oriented approach to personal change."

"he Edge Foundation has produced a report entitled ‘The Skills Mismatch’. It focuses on the disconnect between the education system of our country and the needs of the British economy.

    Download full report

Personal remark: Why prepare people for jobs? Why not for life and as citizens?

The report demonstrates how this dysfunction operates at all levels - schools, further education colleges and universities. It suggests if we are to deliver the skills required over the next decade radical changes are needed.

At the school level we need more 14 year old specialist colleges.

We need FE colleges to spawn 14 year old Career Colleges.

And we need universities to attract more STEM students."

"Revisiting Educational Research through Morin’s Paradigm of Complexity

Because it grounds most of my academic work, the reflection developed in this paper follows the epistemological and anthropological critique characterizing the ʺparadigm of complexityʺ proposed by Edgar Morin. It invites us to question the way one conceives changes and transformations broughtby the use of the notion of complexity itself. In this perspective, instead of discussing Jörgʹs paper focusing on the content of his theoretical propositions, my intent is to question and comment on what I interpreted as being some of the implicit assumptions which frame his reflection."

International School of Knowledge, Innovations, Policies and Territorial Practices
for the United Nations Millennium Platform
    "The
    KIP International School
The School is comprised of a network of experiences, organizations,
specialized centres and universities of interested countries, who intend
to work together to construct new knowledge and develop new tools
for planning and managing development processes. It is based on
existing structures that are involved in development
    practice, in
research for innovation and in building capacities of development
    actors.
The School provides support to all actors who are working to achieve
the goals and values that the international community
    agreed on
    through the principal United Nat
ions summits of the past twenty years
(Millennium Platform), recognizing the serious difficulties they
encounter. While on one hand, the platform indicates a path towards
an equitable, participatory, and environmentally sustainable
    development, on the othe
r, the reality everywhere continues to be
characterized by excessive competition leading to exclusion, poverty,
social tensions, pollution, irrational use of natural resources and other
    dangerous imbalances.
Even those governments and actors most committe
    d to implementing
the Millennium Platform find that the ideas and models of action
available to them are inadequate, resulting from the very cultural
patterns that the Platform wishes to overcome. For these reasons, the
International School aims to help id
    entify new tools for understanding
the complex and contradictory dynamics of development and new
ways to plan and manage it.
    The idea of
creating a School, involving the best experiences being
taken forward by public administrations, institutions, universities,
research centres and social actors in different countries, was first put
forward in a meeting between Edgar Morin and a group of
    experts who
inspired the human development cooperation programmes that started
with the United Nations PRODERE Programme in 1989"
