    • The U.S. wanted to stop Japanese expansion but the American people were not willing to go to war to stop it.
    • Their greatest concern was that the U.S. Pacific Fleet,  based in Pearl Harbor could foil their plans. As insurance, the  Japanese navy undertook to cripple the Pacific Fleet by a  surprise air attack.

    Thesis:

War is not a matter of justice and fairness. War is cruel and scheming. The Americans didn’t realize these factors before the attack on Pearl Harbor. The Americans lived in their own "paradise" where everything seemed harmonic and peaceful and there was no danger ahead. Their desire to stay out of the war in Europe forced them to live in this ideal world. If their policy had been different, they probably would have seen the danger signals and they would have revealed Japan's sweep spectacle much before.

The Japanese caught the Americans when they least expected it. They lived in their own "paradise" where everything seemed harmonic and peaceful and there was no danger ahead. The Japanese success was due to this state of the American minds.

It was on a Sunday morning.

The American army felt superior to the Japanese army and hence they did not expect an attack from the Japanese.
