Note the following from the comments section:
"WIth regard to treatment in MN and your previous caller's comment about getting better treatment in MN, my mom had very different potential outcomes with her throat cancer between the Mayo Clinic and the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Mayo couldn't find the primary source and hence was going to do very extensive chemo and radiation. MD Anderson found the primary source and thus used very focused radiation and somewhat minimal chemo. I don't understand why there is such disparity between the outcomes."
It may or may not be fair to say that MD Anderson is better than Mayo based on this one comment. Note that the commenter limits his remarks to treatment and not disease outcome. I'm learning that a lot depends on the treatment philosophy of an institution. I think the take home message is that second opinions for serious health conditions are nearly always helpful, both for accurate diagnosis and for getting the full range of treatment options.
Mayo Clinic is ranked among the top three in more specialties (13) than any other hospital.
