Article describes how reading tree just donated books to Salt Lake City Elementary School students. Interestingly, TRM just opened a processing center in Salt Lake (see associated articles). Throwing Salt Lake a bone to defuse them ahead of time?
Phil McMullin states that TRM has 2 million titles available online and sells about 300,000 books per month. Elsewhere, it has been described how over a million books have been given to charity.
It's fairly clear that the lion's share of the proceeds and the very best books are going into the for-profit end of the business.
Unfavorable review of Hao-Odnla where TRM's Phil McMullin posted press releases describing acquisition of Discover Books in Abbotsford.
Also where the same "press release" is duplicated with the title recycling old books in Bellingham.
The same TRM acquisition of Discovery Books "Press Release" saved earlier but this one titled "Recycling Old Books Bellingham Washington." Given that Phil McMullin, the TRM CEO authored this, he made a copy, specifically titled it "recycling old books bellingham wa" and then misfiled it within the hierarchy of the press site. Google still picks it up though. Appears to be a deliberate attempt to draw Bellingham into the contribution scheme.
Phil McMullin author of "press release." States nature and mission of TRM, Discover books (just acquired by TRM) and "Reading Tree" which is described as based in Boston. Article seems to suggest that Reading Tree is wholly independent from TRM (e.g., "a dba of "Books for Charity" in Boston).
SMART - the membership based organization providing guidelines and support for textile and "other secondary material recycling oganizations.
Claims to support transparency in labeling of donation boxes.
Article discusses the matter of "for profit" versus "non-profit" collection boxes;the difficulty of the average citizen in telling the difference between the two. Broaches the subject of ethics and "transparency" in "for profit" textile recycling agencies.
IMPORTANT: The lack of transparency by for-profit textile recycling companies is a big issue for the [Secondary Materials and Recycled Textiles Association], associate director [Kaymie Thompson Owen] said from her Bel Air, Md., office (question: is TRM a member in good standing?}
Ostensible press release authored by Phil McMullin on JULY 5th 2010,
announcing the acquisition of Discover Books, Ltd. of Abbotsford, B.C.
Also states the TRM is now purchasing material directly from Salvation Army and Goodwill.
NOTE: "Shady," "backstreet" press release service.
