Experiential Learning at the University of Alberta
'Experiential learning' can be defined in many different ways, but it's simplest to think of it as 'learning by doing'.
By connecting with and learning from other people, pursuing new experiences, and engaging in the broader community, you can learn about yourself and help answer your academic and career questions.
Experiential learning activities might include: volunteering, job shadowing, community service-learning, internships, practicums, and conducting research. These and other activities help expand and apply your knowledge, making connections between how what you're learning in the classroom relates to practical realities.
The Community Service-Learning Program integrates service-learning into existing courses in diverse subjects and disciplines, including women's studies, visual anthropology, rural economy, creative writing, aboriginal governance, criminology, modern language studies, political science, social entrepreneurship, and many others.

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) - in cooperation with science organizations in North America and Germany - is pleased to invite undergraduate students from the US, Canada and the UK in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences and engineering to apply for a summer research internship in Germany. The Undergraduate Researcher Stipend enables undergraduate students to carry out mentored research projects and creative works activities.
The practicum - a field placement with a community-based organization - is a great opportunity for students to bridge theory and practice. Often, the result is a student who has extended his or her knowledge and a host organization that has gained valuable help to execute or evaluate population and public health strategies. All graduate students in a course-based program offered through the School of Public Health complete a practicum as part of their program requirements.
As part of your Physical Education, Recreation or Kinesiology degree you'll be required to complete a practicum. This is a non-paid work experience program in which you're placed with an approved agency.
