On defining target customers (get really specific; Asian and Jewish moms for finding violin students):
    What do they want?
    What do they fear?

    Mistakes
    1) Expecting the other person to recognize your brilliance without you communicating it
Instead, explain to them what you put into the work and why it's different; don't be better, be different

    2)Trying to appeal to everybody

Instead, niche yourself; understand what client/customer wants, get into their head; ability and willingness to pay

    Understanding your clients
    - research (visualize what the client wants, ask self questions from their POV)
    - market research (find people who would have been clients and take them for a coffee, broad-specific-broad; notice keywords)

"I can do an extraordinary job, not for everybody, but for those that want to work with me and who I want to work with."

    Briefcase Technique
    1) ask great questions (figuring out their needs, problems)
    2) present research/work done ahead of time

Interview is about telling a story, conveying main messages; not answering questions

30-60-90 plan (tactics; presented on paper)

Rare to feel understood; asking the right questions (they feel understood)

    Getting clients

    - get 3 paying clients
    - referral through research participants
    - thought leader/expert

Be more than a technician; must also have a vision/story/narrative (do not be a commodity; be the one with a vision)

    Working for free
    - establish value "I usually charge x/hr. But I'm willing to do it for free because I believe in it."
    - use free strategically "But, if I do an amazing job, I'd like you to agree to consider paying me my normal fee OR give me a written testimonial OR artistic freedom."
