I'm sorry if this has been asked earlier, but I have not  been able to locate it, if it has. I am evaluating Resource #2 for evaluation  #3. The author uses and cites material from another source that I may include in  my evaluation. Is this what the APA manual is referring to in section 6.17  Secondary Sources and the Owl Purdue refers to in Citing indirect sources? Would  the citation be something like Severson identified these principles........ (as  cited in Dow, 2008)? Also, would the Severson source information need to be  listed in the Reference section at the end of the evaluation or is the citation  in the text of the evaluation sufficient?

***You have it right...  Severson ....(as cited in ....) Only provide a reference for Severson if you  actually read a work by Severson and use information directly from that work.

There aren't really paragraphs on my AASL website. How should I cite things  on this site?

**You then revert to a Heading

Is it ok to use the  abbreviated: (AASL, 2010) only, since I will spell it all out in the citation at  the top of the assignment?

      **Yes, that is appropriate.

Should I  use a subtitle in the parenthesis to identify where it was located on the  website?

**Yes, anything that a reader can use to directionally orient  themselves to where the quotation is located.

I also have a question about citing the author for my web site. I am  evaluating the Workbook for Selection Policy Writing. At the top it has Office  for Intellectual Freedom, American Library Association. Is that how I would list  it in the citation or would it just be Office of Intellectual Freedom? Then, for  the parenthetical citations, would the author be listed the same  way?

**It would be Office of Intellectual Freedom and the author would be  the same for parenthetical citations. The author in the parenthetical citations  should agree with how the author is presented in the reference list. That way,  when a reader sees who is being referenced in the text, they can quickly go to  the reference list for the corresponding full entry, with the full details on  how to locate the referenced item. They work together in that sense.

So even if I paraphrase or directly quote information from journals or  links from the website, I would not use that journal or link in my parenthetical  or non-parenthetical citations, I would still use the web site citation? Is that  correct?

**If you name the link in terms of stating that those links are  available, then the citation is for the website on which those links exist. If  you actually paraphrase or directly quote from the articles linked, then you  must cite the author and date for that article. It depends on how you are  presenting the information. Does that make sense?

Thank you for the clarification. If I do evaluate the overall website as a  whole and name specific surveys and reports I would assume that I would need to  include them in the references at the end of the evaluation; however, if I name  various publications that have links on this website such as School Library  Journal, and do not include specific article information, do I need to include  reference information for them as well?

**Since they are all located on  the website itself, the citation for the website serves as the place to go to  locate the information so it isn't necessary to provide a reference for any of  them.

I am completely befuddled on who the author of this site is. At the bottom  of one of the pages, it lists contributors, people that helped, and many other  things. Who would I list as the author?

**At the bottom of the first  page/home page see:
Citation: Arizona State Library, Archives and Public  Records. Collection Development Training for Arizona Public Libraries. 2008.  http://www.lib.az.us/cdt

make sure the citation is in APA format and use  it - they are telling you how they want the authorship credited.

      (1) Forgive me if this question has been posted before. I've gone through  all previous posts and can't find it. I located the article I'm reviewing by  using Wilson Web on UNT's library website. I cannot find it online, nor can I  find a DOI. Is it enough to simply say: Retrieved from Wilson Web online  database.

      **Yes, that is fine.

      (2) When posting our evaluation  #2, is the Eval # the number of the article we are reviewing, or do we all title  it #2 followed by the title of the article?

**All title it #2 so we  can keep them grouped together. Thanks!

In my article evaluation I am including a quote in which the author uses  acronyms. Earlier in the article the author includes what the acronym stands  for, but doesn’t do so within the quote I am using. I feel that I need to make  sure that my readers know what the acronym stands for, so would it be correct to  use brackets since the APA manual indicates that brackets can be used for  material inserted in a quotation by some person other than the original writer?  For example “……simple ICT [Information and Communication Technology] related  problems……”

**Excellent question. Yes, very appropriate to insert the  full title in square brackets. And as we learned in cataloging, square brackets  indicate that you inserted the information.

The title of my article ends with an exclamation mark. When using it in a  sentence, do I include this punctuation? It really makes my sentences look  funny, and Word definitely doesn't like it.

Thanks, Shelley. I came across similar info in the "APA Style Guide to  Electronic References". I think that clarifies it for me ("think" being the  operative word). I'm thinking that a published report, though it appears on a  web site and the site could change, wouldn't need to have the retrieval date  specified because the report itself won't change. Given that the web site link  appears to have held steady for a while and should continue to do so, I think  I'm safe without the date.

I found it necessary to use another source (a website) to prove that the  creators of the article I evaluated are credible. I included a quote from the  site and want to make sure I'm citing it correctly:

The website of the  Consortium for School Networking (CoSN) (2010) indicates that this organization  was created in 1992 with a membership which includes “technology leaders, policy  makers, and decision makers from the public and private sectors” who have a  mission to improve teaching and learning through the integration of technology  (Consortium for School Networking).

**Not quite. Since you introduce the  quote by stating where it comes from you don't need to repeat the source  following the qutotation. BUT, you do need to identify the location of the  quotation immediately following the last set of quotation marks. In a journal  article that would tbe page number (p. X) but in a website it would be the  paragraph number, or heading or some distinguishing location that a reader could  easily find on that website. So you should have private sectors" (para. #) for  example.

If I understand correctly, this is how I cite the source since I  am quoting from it directly. Were I paraphrasing, it would be something  like:

The website of the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN) (2010)  indicates that this organization was created in 1992 with a membership which  includes leaders, policy makers, and decision makers from numerous public and  private organizations who have a mission to improve teaching and learning  through the integration of technology. Is this correct?

**Yes, for a  paraphrase this is correct.

No, don't leave it in lowercase when citing or when referring to it in your evaluation.

Until I get this source to help me,  can I feel comfortable using the OWL   Purdue Writing lab site?    http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/
I've always found this a    great site to help me with citing  sources.

**Yes, the web site is a  good   source to use.

As long as we stick to the rubric for our article evaluations we should be  fine...but I was looking for a list of items (student name, student id #, course  name, date, etc) that needs to be included in out evaluations...is there such a  list of requirements?

**The only requirements are what is stated in the  rubric: Student name, and Post to your discussion forum as a Word 97-2003  attachment using the subject - "Eval#_Title of the article/web site" ; the  attachment file uses the filename - "LastName_Initial of First  Name_Eval##_Title".

I was setting up my calendar and noticed (from the course calendar) that  there were two dates for submitting evaluations to Turnitin. It is listed on  February 28 and again on March 7. Is February 28 our personal article  evaluations and March 7 our response evaluations? I need a little clarification.  Thank you.

**If you look at the schedule link on the homepage it's  clearer. You have one week to submit the evaluations to turnitin, from Feb. 28  to March 7. You only submit your evaluations, not the responses. And you copy  and paste your evaluations into one long word document to submit them. You  submit the original version of your evaluations, not an edited version with our  comments.
