The Wave Hub is an underwater socket off the North Coast of Cornwall wich will allow up to four developers at a time to carry out full sea trial tests of arrays of their devices over several years. Insallation of the cable is expected in spring 2010.
Initially three companies were chosen out of a groupf of sixteen potentials: Ocean Prospect, Ocean Power and Fred. Olsen Ltd.
Ocean Prospect intends to trial up to 10 Pelamis P750 devices developed by Ocean Power Delivery of Edinburgh. In April, Ocean Prospect (and patner Eon) pulled out of the Wave Hub project to focus on testing in Orkney because the test site in Orkney is likely to be finished a year ahead of the Wave Hub.
American Ocean Power Technologies plans to install a 5MW project at the Wave Hub based on its PowerBuoy(TM) wave energy converter.
Fred Olsen Ltd. has developed a unique multiple point-absorber system for energy extraction from the waves.
Australia-based Oceanlinx were named as the fourth developer but after receiving a grant from the Australian government, decided to test in Australian waters and pulled out of the project.
Orecon Limited were named the company to replace Oceanlinx, testing its wave to energy buoy. However in November, despite the company having a place on the Wave Hub scheme, and recently having agreed a contract to supply three wave devices to a Portuguese shipyard, due to the economic climate their venture capital funders withdrew their support and they face closure by the end of January if no other funding can be found.
Construction of the Wave Hub began in November.
