• a long time now that has not been the case. 38 Therefore, as at present its glory has waned because it is  no longer noted for the truth of its prophecies, so formerly it would not have  enjoyed so exalted a reputation if it had not been trustworthy in the highest  degree.

• of these some, as I think, were false; some came true by chance, as happens  very often even in ordinary speech; some were so intricate and obscure that  their interpreter needs an interpreter and the oracles themselves must be  referred back to the oracle; and some so equivocal that they require a  dialectician to construe them.
• Why are Delphic oracles (of which I have just given you examples) not  uttered at the present time and have not been for a long time?c And why  are they regarded with the utmost contempt? When pressed at this point their  apologists affirm that 'the long flight of time has gradually dissipated the  virtue of the place whence came those subterranean exhalations which inspired  the Pythian priestess to utter oracles.' One might think that they are talking  about wine or brine which do evaporate. But the question is about the virtue of  a place — a virtue which you call not only 'natural' but even 'divine,' —  pray how did it evaporate? 'By length of time,' you say. But what length of time  could destroy a divine power? And what is as divine as a subterranean exhalation  that inspires the soul with power to foresee the future — a power such that  it not only sees things a long time before they happen, but actually foretells  them in rhythmic verse? When did the virtue disappear? Was it after men began to  be less credulous?

• did labour more than those who preached the Son of God among them of the  circumcision. For they were assisted by the Scriptures, which the Lord confirmed  and tiff-filled, in coming such as He had been announced; but here, [in the case  of the Gentiles,] there was a certain foreign erudition, and a new doctrine [to  be received, namely], that the gods of the nations not only were no gods at all,  but even the idols of demons; and that there is one God, who is "above all  principality, and dominion, and power, and every name which is named;"(4) and  that His Word, invisible by nature, was made palpable and visible among men, and  did descend "to death, even the death of the cross;"(5) also, that they who  believe in Him shall be incorruptible and not subject to suffering, and shall  receive the kingdom of heaven. These things, too, were preached to the Gentiles  by word, without [the aid of] the Scriptures: wherefore, also, they who preached  among the Gentiles underwent greater labour. But, on the other hand, the faith  of the Gentiles is proved to be of a more noble description, since they followed  the word of God without the instruction [derived] from the [sacred] writings  (sine instructione literarum).

• Most elementary Sunday school lessons are built around primary interpretation  – the plain simple message of the Bible. Most intermediate and adult Sunday  school lessons are designed to teach practical application – how to live godly  in this present world. It is also a fact that most sermons deal with practical  application themes. These are necessary foundations for the believer. Their  importance cannot be minimized. However, most Christians do not graduate beyond  these levels of biblical studies.

• In conclusion, it is clear to see that these three ancient  Bible translators used the Aramaic word memra to mean God, the Word of  God [translated from the Hebrew word dabar] or Me, when referring to  important occasions in the life of Israel. They also translated to memra  in regard to God’s covenants.

  And it repented the Lord through His word that He made man on the  earth.

  And the Lord said, "This is the sign that I set  for covenant between my Word and you."

   

  Genesis 15:6 - And Abraham believed in the Lord.
  And Abraham  believed in the Word of the Lord.

   

  Genesis 20:3 - And God came to Abimelech.
  And the Word from  before the Lord came to Abimelech.

   

  Genesis 31: 49 - May the Lord keep watch between you and  me.
  May the Word of the Lord keep watch between you and me.

   

  Exodus 14:31 - And they believed in the Lord.
  And they  believed in the Word of the LORD.

   

  Exodus 20: 1- And the Lord spoke all these words.

  Exodus 25:22 - And I will meet with you there.
  And I will  appoint my Word for you there.

   

  Leviticus 26:9- And I will turn to you.
  And I will turn  through my Word to do good to you.

   

  Numbers 10:35 - Rise up, O Lord!
  Rise up, O Word of the  Lord!

   

  Numbers 11:23 - Is the hand of the Lord shortened?
  Is the  Word of the Lord detained?

   

  Deuteronomy 1:30 - The Lord your God who goes before you, He  Himself will fight for you.
  The Lord your God who leads before you, His Word  will fight for you.

   

  Deuteronomy 18:19 - I myself will require it of him.
  My Word  will require it of him.

   

  Deuteronomy 31:3 - The Lord your God will pass before  you.
  The Lord your God, His Word will pass before you.

   

  Joshua 1:5 - As I was with Moses I will be with you.
  As my  Word was in support of Moses, so my Word will be in your support.

   

  Judges 11:10 - The Lord will be witness between us.
  The Word  of the Lord will be witness between us.

   

  Isaiah 45:17 - Israel will be saved by the Lord.
  Israel will  be saved by the Word of the Lord.
• "'The Lord's Memra will be my God'; 'I will save them through their God, the  Lord's Memra'; Abraham was justified through the Memra; the Memra gave Israel  the Law; Moses prayed to the Memra; Israel was justified through the Memra's  instrumentality and the Memra even created the world." In fact, according to  Targum Neofiti, man was created in the image of the Memra of the Lord
• The Memra/Logos, an extension of the Lord Himself - in one sense God and in  another sense with God - came down among us.
