Most educators would assume measurement to be the obvious use of Google Earth in math lessons. The ruler tool is versatile in that it can measure distances in centimeters, yards, miles, and other units. These lessons will go beyond simple measurement of point A to point B and demonstrate how linear measure can be applicable to real world problems.
Measurement Activity Collections
The sites below each have a collection of interactive games and/or resources related to measurement.
Search list for SMART Board Notebook measurement lessons for Pre-6th Grade levels.
Collection of measurement games for length, mass and volume.
Linear
Sites for learning and interacting with linear measurement.
Search list for SMART Notebook lesson files for Linear Measurement from the SMART Exchange site.
Reading a ruler is a valuable skill that you will likely use on your job, in your hobbies, and in your personal every day life. Without measuring devices like rulers, and people that can read them, we would still be living in caves.
Simple measurement practice game. Measurement in INCHES & CENTIMETERS.
Mass
Sites for learning and interacting with mass measurement.
Search list for SMART Notebook lesson files for Mass from the SMART Exchange site.
Each shape has a different value. See if you can work out the values of the shapes by adding them to the scales. Try balancing the scales with different shapes on either side - it can be done!
This drag and drop balance scales simulation is an open ended application that teachers can use to support mathematical learning in a variety of ways.
Measure the mass of various objects with weights (grams) on a balance scale.
Build up to algebraic thinking by exploring this balance tool using shapes of unknown weight. Challenge yourself to find the weight of each shape in one of six built-in sets or a random set.
Temperature
Sites for learning and interacting with temperature measurement.
Search list for SMART Notebook lessons on temperature at the SMART Exchange.
Cute interactive for primary students to dress a bear to go outside and play. Requires students to read a thermometer and make a value judgement from freezing to hot. Simple to use.
Practice reading a thermometer and changes (differences) in temperature between to readings.
Slide the thermometer to reveal both degrees Fahrenheit and Celsius. Formulas for conversion are provided for practice.
Using the thermometer set the correct temperature for each question. There are 5 questions. You have three chances to correctly set the temperature in the thermometer for each question.
Volume
Sites for learning and interacting with volume measurement.
Search list for SMART Notebook lesson files for volume from the SMART Exchange site.
Pour liquid from a large container to a smaller container to find different volumes from 1 to 8 quarts. This small challenge requires students to use addition and subtraction to determine the amount (volume) remaining or needed.
