The Math Future Group is an international network of researchers, educators, families, community leaders and technology enablers. We are collaborating on a variety of research and development projects and conversation threads about social media as it relates to mathematics and mathematics education.
Free mathematics software for learning and teaching. Interactive graphics, algebra and spreadsheets. From elementary school to university level. Free learning materials.
Bring ideas to life from recreation and education to research and industry.
@briancsmith: Wolfram CDF & Demonstrations Project is a whole lot more interesting than that passive Khan Academy http://t.co/ZECi270F #edchat
Most educators would assume measurement to be the obvious use of Google Earth in math lessons. The ruler tool is versatile in that it can measure distances in centimeters, yards, miles, and other units. These lessons will go beyond simple measurement of point A to point B and demonstrate how linear measure can be applicable to real world problems.
Math teacher Dan Meyer explains how presenting real-life scenarios through photos and videos makes math problems "irresistible" to students.
A great example of interdisciplinary learning, although taking part in school. A 13 year old's walk in the woods reveals a mathematical pattern that leads to more powerful solar array.
TED Talk - Math Curriculum Makeover by Dan Meyer
The objective of good math teaching should not be to "cover the curriculum" but to show students how to explore our fascinating and beautiful world through the lens of mathematics. We must change our focus in math education from a focus on a largely irrelevant and uninteresting set of learning objectives to a focus on making math relevant and engaging for students.
A blog by Bill McCallum related to implementing the Common Core Standards. About: "Since I get a lot of questions about how various projects related to the Common Core are coming along, I thought it might make sense to report on that occasionally. This is just a record of projects that I am involved or know about, not intended to be a comprehensive listing, although I am happy to pass on information about projects that I know about."
The Illustrative Mathematics Project will provide guidance to states, assessment consortia, testing companies, and curriculum developers by illustrating the range and types of mathematical work that students will experience in a faithful implementation of the Common Core State Standards, and by publishing other tools that support implementation of the standards.
The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy.
