  • Note vs 13 also "for all the sins of Baasha and the sins of Elah his son, by which they had sinned and by which they had made Israel sin, in proking the LORD God of Israel to anger with their idols.

  • Commenting on 1 Kings 16:7 - KJV "by provoking 'God' to anger by the work of his hands." We should note that Baasha was ruler and might have commissioned the making of the idols. He at least signed off on them, but I don't think that diminishes the force of the following application.
    
    There is a vital truth here. When one participates in a sin, they become a co-conspiritor. What is the application? Based on the above principle,
    
    1. Parents who spend the drug money of their children are guilty of the crime of drug smuggling (in God's sight).
    2. (applying to Buddhist situation) the monks who eat the meat are some way responsible for the kiilling of the animal.
    3. Those who watch child pornography are guilty of leading a minor into sin even though they were not physically present when the video or pictures were taken and did not personally know the individuals involved.

• he was only the tool of God's justice, but a servant to his own lusts,
• Those who are in any way employed in denouncing or executing the justice of God (magistrates or ministers) are concerned to do it from a good principle and in a holy manner, lest it turn into sin to them and they make themselves obnoxious by it.

    Leaders are often responsible for discipling and administoring justice. There is a great danger for a leader who disciplines someone but who is in fact himself guilty of the same crimes.
    
    Also doing God's will is no safety for someone who does it with the wrong motives and the wrong spirit.
• Note, Those who resemble others in their sins may expect to resemble them in their plagues, especially those who seem zealous against such sins in others as they allow themselves in; the house of Jehu was reckoned with for the blood of the house of Ahab, Hos. 1:4.

• The traitor was the successor, to whom the unthinking people tamely submitted, as if it were all one to them what kind they had, so that they had one.

  • A quote like this deserves a comment, If nothing more than to give pause so that the truth can sink in.
    
    People are fickle. The whims of the masses are capricious. The crowds who cheered at Christ's triumphal entry called for his crusifixion just a few days later. We should not base our decisions or our opinions on the mood of the majority.
• The siege of Gibbethon is quitted (Philistines are sure to gain when Israelites quarrel) and Zimri is prosecuted.

  • Wow. There is a sermon right there. The scripture reading should be 1 Kings 16:17 "And Omri went up from Gibbethon, and all Israel with him, and they besieged Tirzah."
• The kings of Israel changed their royal seats, Shechem first, then Tirzah, now Samaria; but the kings of Judah were constant to Jerusalem, the city of God. Those that cleave to the Lord fix, but those that leave him ever wander.
