biljana belamaric wilsey's List: 5 Websites I Like

  • Jan 09, 09

I wanted to take this opportunity and plug my non-profit organization's site, mostly because I would love to hear others' comments about it. What I aimed to do with it is provide easy navigation (2 clicks to get to any materials) and make it easy on the eyes so the users can spend long periods of time learning on the website if they wish without their eyes getting overly tired of the interface.

    • I like that this website takes into consideration the types of audiences that would use the site and right off the bat narrows down the type of information the users see. I like the expandable and collapsible menu on the left and the menus at the top that give me an idea of where I am on the site. For example, with the lesson plans, the menu on the left expands to guide the user through several screens for that lesson plan. I dislike that sometimes the user might be in the middle of reading a lesson plan, click on an icon and be taken to a completely different part of the website without even realizing that he/she is no longer looking at the lesson plans section. I also dislike that the menus continue at the bottom of the page with a different font size (plus some of the links don't work - big no no!)I like that this website takes into consideration the types of audiences that would use the site and right off the bat narrows down the type of information the users see. • Neat things about it are that it's well organized and I like how when you scroll over a picture it has audio that tells you what you'll find if you click there. I also like the breadth/wealth of resources and the educational approach. I really dislike that it has several menus (make it look too busy) and I dislike the yellow elements. • I like the clean and simple look of this website and I really like that cultural elements have been incorporated so prominently - I am a big proponent of using cultural artifacts in teaching foreign languages. I dislike some of the content (for example, the lessons in the first year course are pdfs) and I wish it had more interactive exercises. I also dislike that the clean and simple look of the first few pages you click on is not maintained throughout the site (for example, some pages are just links on a white background); it doesn't seem unified.I like the clean and simple look of this website and I really like that cultural elements have been incorporated so prominently - I am a big proponent of using cultural artifacts in teaching foreign languages. • I like the clean lines and easy navigation of this site; it seems easy and straightforward to get to information you need (in most cases 1-2 clicks away). The information is presented without any frills and thrills and yet it's not boring. I dislike the menu at the bottom - I don't see why it's separated from the menu on the left, but this is a minor annoyance.I like the clean lines and easy navigation of this site; it seems easy and straightforward to get to information you need (in most cases 1-2 clicks away).
