Balvarez2's List: Statistics

Statista is a relatively new resource that pulls together all things statistical. There are fee-based versions that will allow access to premium content, but it does a nice job of searching through freely-available resources, too. I like that they show you the source of their data and will link you to the original report or site. No matter what your topic (even if it isn't seemingly very "statistic-y" or numerical), Statista is worth a try.

Like Statista, Statistic Brain pulls together all things statistical (and, like Statista, they cite all of their sources). I'm not aware of a fee-based version, so you will have to put up with some ads, but they are fairly unobtrusive. You can browse their categories, including business, companies and demographics or just do a search on something like business failures or iPhones or frozen yogurt. Another resource worth a try just to see what they have.

USAGov (formerly known as FirstGov) is intended to transcend the traditional boundaries of government to connect users to all U.S. Government information and services. Launched in September 2000 and renamed in January 2007, USAGov.gov searches over 186 million pages of government information, services, and online transactions. USAGov also provides a topical index and links to state and local government, and contacts with government officials. Another good place to start when you're not sure which agency or group tracks the info you're looking for.

Similar to the UMich GovDocs Statistical Resources on the Web site but from the perspective of someone looking for government sources of business information, this index from UCLA's Anderson School of Management Library is a great pointer to all kinds of information.

This is a meta site from Cal State Northridge that points to a lot of great online (and print) resources for finding zip code statistics in various categories like business, education and even political and health info by zip code

This is a great site for finding quick statistics by zip code. It's mentioned on the above Cal State site, as well. You can browse by state and then by county if you don't know which zip code you want. Try a search on your zip code and see some nice graphs and charts on your area's population size, household, social and economic characteristics. Pay attention to the links because there is more hidden behind them--click on Education to see a list of area schools, for example.

American FactFinder is the search interface for finding data from the US Census in the form of maps, tables, and reports. There is *a lot* here, but with some practice and lots of digging, you can get useful data out of it.(This site was also mentioned in the Consumer section).

Statistics of U.S. Businesses (SUSB) is an annual series (although 2005 is the most current year available) that provides national and state-level data on numbers of businesses and employees, broken out by industry. The series excludes data on self-employed individuals, employees of private households, railroad employees, agricultural production employees, and most government employees.

  • Oct 08, 14

County Business Patterns is an annual series that provides county economic data by industry. Like Statistics of US Businesses, County Business Patterns excludes data on self-employed individuals, employees of private households, railroad employees, agricultural production employees, and most government employees.
