    How E-commerce Saves Money.

    Authors:
    Heizer, JayRender, Barry

    Source: IIE Solutions. Aug2000, Vol. 32 Issue 8, p22
The publication the source was in, date of its publication, volume number issue and page number.
Discusses the five ways electronic (e)-commerce can impact industrial engineering activities economically. Advantages from e-commerce collaboration by virtual teams in product and process design; Ways in which e-procurement is enhanced; How electronic commerce can support just-in-time systems.
The term e-commerce refers to the use of computer networks, primarily the Internet, to buy and sell products, services, and information.
There are five ways e-commerce can impact IE activities and bring about these cost reductions So effectively; product design, e-procurement, inventory tracking, inventory reduction, scheduling, and logistics. No matter what your assignment is, e-commerce is coming your way.
    1 Product design
E-commerce collaboration by virtual teams in product and process design may not only be cheaper, it can also yield better and quicker decisions. As a communication and collaboration tool, the Internet allows members of product teams in different locations to share knowledge while driving down development costs.
    2 E-procurement
E-procurement is being enhanced in three ways through purchasing or order release communicated over the Internet or by approved online vendor catalogs, via requests for quotes and bid packaging, and through online auctions.
Online catalogs provide information about products in electronic form via the Internet. They are quickly improving cost comparison and bidding processes and can enrich traditional catalogs by incorporating voice and video clips. Online catalogs are available in three versions: those provided by vendors, catalogs developed by buyers, and ones provided by intermediaries.
Online auction sites also can be maintained by sellers, buyers, or intermediaries, General Motors' approach to selling excess steel is a forerunner of business-to-business auctions that every industry can be expected to pursue. IEs find online auctions a fertile area for disposing of excess raw material and discontinued or excess inventory. FreeMarkets maintains an intermediary auction site. Online auctions with lower entry barriers can simultaneously increase the potential number of customers.
    3 Inventory tracking
FedEx's pioneering efforts at tracking packages from pickup to delivery has shown the way for IEs to do the same for their shipments and inventory.
    4 Inventory reduction
Bar code tracking and random stocking in warehouses are becoming standard fare for the modern IE.
    5 Scheduling and logistics improvements
FedEx maintains a unified view of the data in different parts of its network so it can better track and coordinate orders for its end customer.
FedEx believes e-commerce will allow the company to get a handle on where each piece of Cisco's shipments is headed and when it will be ready for shipment. FedEx will then deliver the pieces precisely when and where they are needed for assembly and installation.
    New IE tools
E-commerce is not just the new business term of the millennium; it is a new way of thinking -- and a new way of doing business.
    B2B bidding
The consumer side of Internet shopping is growing quickly. But the business-to-business side of purchasing is where the action is. Glen Meakem, CEO of FreeMarkets at http://www.freemarkets.com, a Pittsburgh industrial e-commerce company, says live online bidding and better-informed purchasing decisions lead to greater cost savings than does more traditional purchasing. Meakem notes that buyers save an average of 16 percent through online auctions.

Deals with Internet-enabled collaboration among manufacturing companies. Outsourcing agreement of Nortel Networks with Solectron Corp.; Marketing perspective of Agile Software Corp.; Impact of Internet collaboration.
New models for manufacturing are emerging globally, principally among firms that are able to leverage the ease, speed, and affordability of Internet collaboration. Among those collaborative efforts are outsourcing of noncore processes and Web-enabled procurement and product development.
The scope of the trend toward outsourcing--and the related need for more intimate collaboration among manufacturing partners--is especially pronounced in the high-tech sector.
The new collaborative model also is refocusing solution providers. With the advent of the Internet, business software firms that once offered solutions for integrating the enterprise have moved to offerings that integrate companies with their outsourcing partners and other constituencies.
INTERNET COLLABORATION AMPLIFIES THE ISSUE OF core competency in a new way with new consequences for corporate structure and strategy.

trying to collaborate with faraway people via phone and e-mail
Internet collaboration tool - a set of graphical applications that lets you easily interact with colleagues via your own private network.
When it comes to long-distance collaboration, phone calls and e-mails just don't cut it.
It's also used by accounting firms, banks, public schools, and wedding planners, and it needn't be limited to extranets.
It can also build intranets (private networks for use within a small to mediumsize business).
It's so simple that anyone with a passing familiarity of the Web can quickly set up a private site.
Basecamp gives users the basic tools needed to post messages, tasks, and schedules.
You can even adorn each page with a small company logo.
Basecamp lacks some higher-end collaboration features, such as whiteboards and chat.
the price is certainly more attractive than that of full-blown collaboration sites.
Some tools provide a full blown collaborative setting whereas others don't. you'll be able to file-share, video conference or share your desktop. Innovation at its finest.
    Groove Virtual Office
it sets up what the company likes to call virtual workspaces: customizable windows where people can not only share information but interact in real time.
you have to install a 40MB software client before you can start collaborating, and you'll need an additional 60MB for storing data.
Groove operates like a peer-to-peer network:
All data is stored on your machine and the machines of your collaborators - not on third-party servers.
You can create a new workspace simply by clicking on a link at the top of the LaunchBar.
You can create a standard workspace with a discussion forum and a tool for sending files back and forth across the Net.
You can create a special file-sharing workspace that lets multiple people edit the exact same file across multiple machines, automatically synchronizing changes from each user, or you can create a custom workspace, drawing from 15 different templates.
Once your workspace is up and running, you can add all sorts of new tools at your leisure.
Bringing in new collaborators is a breeze. Those who are already Groove users can be seamlessly sent an invitation to your workspace over the Groove network.
Groove runs in the background, and when someone comes online or posts new information, you can arrange for various alerts to pop up on your Windows taskbar.
    Professional Edition
    $179 direct
Intranets.com is ideal for collaboration within your company. But it works just as well as an extranet, letting you interact with outside clients. In addition to sharing to-do lists, calendars, and files, you can set up and manage your own online databases
Much like Basecamp, Intranets.com runs inside your Web browser, and you can register for the service and get your own private site up and running easily.
All the tools - including the one that builds online databases - are wonderfully intuitive, and once you get the hang of them, you can use a convenient shortcut menu to take care of particularly common tasks in half the time.
The service is preferable to Basecamp, if only because you can share files without setting up your own FTP server, but its high-end tools tip the balance even further.
You're also given your own 800 number for arranging a concurrent conference call.
We're especially impressed with the new Web conferencing tool.
    Not only can you share your desktop across the Web;
from $59.95 per month for five users to $4,000 a month for 1,000 users, and you'll have to pay extra for Web conferencing.

Considers the use of Internet collaboration tools. The use of Web-based presentation software; The assertion that collaboration software cannot stand alone and requires a support system; The belief that companies that most effectively use collaboration are technological companies who have a higher comfort level with the technology.
Web-based presentation software, and some of the hosted presentation services in particular, have gotten me to look more kindly on collaborative tools.
Use the Internet, Java and HTML to present to customers, partners and co-workers without flying here and there and booking expensive conference space. The reality is complex: These technologies can't really stand on their own yet, let alone work together, so those customers, partners and co-workers need a support system to get past technology hurdles. This is where the services come in.
We saw as many as three out of 12 attendees get lost or disconnected during our Shoot-Out testing.
During the average meeting, as many as two or three out of 100 attendees could wind up disconnected from a presentation.
or companies that want to commit to this technology for use on a regular basis, as a means of connecting with either business partners or customers, the question of whether to self-host or outsource is more complex. Here, the services provide a good way to get users up to speed learning the products and technology. Any company that feels the need to bring the software in-house needs to be confident that either the IT department or the software vendor can provide immediate responsiveness on a support call. If an attendee of one of these virtual meetings doesn't get back online immediately, you can forget about getting that attendee to participate willingly in one of those meetings again.
