A collection of articles supporting or questioning the wisdom of the North American "earlier is better" approach to literacy. This is a debate we need to have to make sure that we are supporting our early learners appropriately. My question is: Is our push to have children reading fluently by the end of grade 1 doing more harm than good to people whose brains are not yet ready to learn to read? I encourage people to search for research on both sides of this issue so we can make decisions about how our schools approach literacy based on solid brain-based evidence.
