This particular post has some excellent advice from an A-level examiner, who clearly thinks along very similar lines as I do. I've always been uncomfortable with simplistic readings of war literature, and the privileging of literature that emphasises the futility of war and downplays the complexity of human emotion involved.

Gary Sheffield’s ‘Forgotten Victory’, Brian Bond’s The Unquiet Western Front and Dan Todman’s The Great War: Myth and Memory, which question the orthodox literary view that the War was entirely futile.
