NOTE: For classroom rules to be effective, they must be broad enough to leave room for the unexpected, but narrow enough to give students a clear idea of what is expected and what the consequences for misbehavior will be. I've found that it is important to keep the "list" of rules extremely brief and as positive as possible. One way that I have been able to do this is by limiting my list to 4 or 5 broad rules that look more like objectives. I type these "category rules" in large, bold type. Under each "category rule," in smaller, lighter type, I list several subheadings.
