The refreshing color of the ocean water is enough to soothe our senses and calm them. This beautiful blue hue is loved by the people and they incorporate it in their outfits, jewelry, accessories etc. If we talk of jewelry, then this hue is best displayed in the aquamarine gem which is rightly named as well. Birthstone of the month of March, this gem is known to bestow the wearer with love, friendship and good luck.
Its use in the jewelry dates back to very ancient times and the craze is still on. The aquamarine jewelry worn by the Hollywood actresses in the latest Oscar awards proves that the gemstone is still a loved one! The Royal ladies love this gemstone very much and the name that tops the list of its Royal lovers is of Queen Elizabeth.
Among her large collection of gemstone jewelry, aquamarine parure created its own niche and she loved it very dearly. Let us check out the jewelry that contributed to this collection and how this parure originated.
For her coronation in the year 1953, the President of Brazil presented her with the gift of beautiful necklace and earrings having aquamarine studded in them. This beautiful gift took one year to collect the large Brazilian aquamarines of matching hue. The set is set in platinum and the clever use of diamonds is made by Mappin and Webb to break the monopoly of the blue hue. The necklace had a large detachable pendant. After this wonderful first gift, Brazil still continued to collect more stones that matched the gift and finally in 1958, she was presented with a large brooch and bracelet to match the set.
The Royal Lady so much liked this gift that she ordered the Royal jeweler Garrard to add a matching tiara to the jewelry to complete the set. The jeweler did a marvelous job and a beautiful tiara was made having a platinum bandeau set with diamonds and aquamarines and three large upright aquamarines with diamond surrounds. These uprights are detachable and can be used as brooches.
But the story doesn’t end here. The queen experimented more on the tiara and in 1971, she added four aquamarine and diamond scroll ornaments around the upright ones. These ornaments came from the gift that she got from the Governor of Sao Paulo when she was on a state visit to Brazil in 1968. The central aquamarine upright on the tiara was replaced with the large aquamarine pendant that originally was attached to the necklace. The necklace pendant was then replaced with a smaller one.
This is how the aquamarine parure of the Queen was modified time and again to attain its latest looks. The Royal Lady fondly wore this collection and needless to say, it complimented her in the best possible manner.
