Maureen Driedger's List: Browsers/Social Bookmarking Tools

  • Jan 09, 13

More than a social bookmarking site Diigo says that "it is solely about social networking through knowledge-sharing." This focus makes it especially useful to educators & students or people who just want to concentrate on research & the collection & organization of information without all the excessive fluff one has to wade through on other social networking sites. Some of the nicest features are the ability to bookmark privately and to make titled lists of bookmarks as well as to easily add annotations for each entry- I can see this being useful for those doing research for major presentations/papers or even for authors who wish to keep their research/sources private until their work has been published. (Recommend to the faculty, esp. those currently working on dissertations/books) Diigo is currently a 12-person team of self-labeled "information junkies" with wide-ranging experience in the software development, marketing, academia, and investment management fields.

Google Chrome is a web browser designed to optimize speed, maintain simplicity (ie: you can search & navigate from the same box & control the arrangement of your tabs), & provide enhanced security when browsing the web by using built-in phishing & malware protection. More control over your privacy settings is another perk as well as a plethora of ways to customize your own Chrome browser making it highly personalized for those who desire that experience while using their web browser. I use it & would recommend it as a superior browsing experience for anyone.

This a blog by Ben Myers who currently teaches Systematic Theology at Charles Sturt University's School of Theology in Sydney, Australia. He tackles the topics of theology, books and culture, making it a good read for God, Society & Culture students as well as Literature & Faith students, or anyone interested in the intersection between faith & culture from a thoughtful christian perspective. Although this particular link is to his review on the best books, films, music, TV & websites of 2011, the whole blog is worth following-you'll want to mine the quite lengthy list of bloggers he follows as well for more gems!! (See also his blog post entitled "Twelve theses on libraries and librarians")

Site of WAI (Web Accessibility Initiative) containing strategies, guidelines, & resources to make the Web accessible to people with disabilities. Links for customizing web browsers (esp. text to speech) which will be useful for next year when we tentatively have an on-campus student with visual impairment. (Route to Student Development or Academic Advisor for presentation).

Social page of Search Engine Watch website which includes how-to guides for social media marketing. This would be useful for Lead Team/Student Development team/Advancement in building/maintaining Bethany brand as social media is increasingly a factor in determining which college students will attend.
