Alex Elliott's List: English 11 Chris McCandless Hero Essay

  • Thesis Statement

Although some may think that Chris McCandless does not fit the definition of a Tragic Hero, he still always did what he thought was right, nothing stopped him from achieving his goal, and lastly he did not deserve the punishment of death.

    • ABRAHAM LINCOLN was the nation's tragic hero. No American has ever climbed over so many obstacles to rise so high; none has fallen so precipitously at the moment of his triumph. In the nearly 125 years since his death, Lincoln has become the suffering servant and the man of sorrows of American civil religion.
      • Notes/ Paraphrase/ Summary

This quote gives me the option to compare Chris McCandless to President Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln is the classic case of a tragic having done so many good things and getting assassinated for it, and dieing to early. This article gives me the option to go into detail on Lincoln's life and how he is a tragic hero and how he compares to Chris.

  • The Hero With a Thousand Faces

"A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonder: fabulous forces are there encountered and a decisive victory is won: the hero comes back from this mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons on his fellow man." (30)

    Notes/ Summary

In this quote we get the idea of what it is like for a hero to start his journey. It talks about how he "ventures" from his regular land/ life into this never region, for some hero's this new region could just be a place that they have always wanted to travel to like Chris. At the end of the quote it makes a reference to when the come back they will be stronger, and I think that is one of the things Chris wanted from himself to leave Alaska a stronger man but he never got the chance to because of his tragic death.

    • An effective tragic hero, Aristotle says, is neither thoroughly good nor thoroughly evil. He or she suffers more misfortune than is deserved, but also nourishes a fatal flaw that animates the course of events. We pity the hero, but also fear for ourselves, feeling our own flaws vulnerable to a convergence of external forces - luck, circumstance, the gods, fate - that will get some tragic ball rolling. These forces are impossible to predict. As George Steiner has written, they represent the otherness of the world that "waits for us in ambush at the crossroads."
      • Notes/ Paraphrase/ Summary

This article not only gives me a book about a tragic hero to compare Chris to but more importantly it will help me with my thesis statement. The highlighted text shows Aristotle's "definition" of what a tragic hero is and that will help me make my thesis statement.

    • Heroes  are ordinary people who do extraordinary things that motivate us in some way. It can become a huge responsibility to be held in such regard. We expect the people we admire to behave in a particular manner and we can become easily disappointed if they cannot live up to our expectations.
    • Our  heroes  are individuals and agencies that changed the life of our city just by a simple act of kindness, heroism or inspiration. It is not what a person does that makes him or her a  hero  , it is the effect they have on others that makes the difference.

Whether it's the hero's that you read about in comics or the one's that are in the sporting industry they will do anything to acheive their goals. When it comes to sports your goal is to be the best at what ever sport that you are in. Once to get to a certain level nothing will be able to stop the most determined from getting their price. This is how you can compare a sports hero to the one's that are in the comic books.

    • Lawrence became one of the greatest guerrilla leaders of all time, mastering the small (devastating raids on enemy railways) and the large: as Korda convincingly argues, if his hero's Mideast mapmaking, respectful of ethnic territory and ancient trade routes, had been followed after the war, the region might not have become the bloody mess it is today.

    • "America stepped into the Middle East as British and French colonial domination receded," thereby becoming "the chief guarantor of the region's peace...." This is another way of saying that we were chosen to take over from Sisyphus, the tragic hero of Greek mythology condemned to spend eternity daily rolling a large boulder up a steep incline, only to have it roll back down as it neared the top at day's end.
      • Notes

This passage shows us how you can use an example of a tragic hero to back up an event that has happened. In this case the make a reference to the United States stepping into the Middle East. They compare this to Sisyphus, the tragic hero in Greek mythology that rolled a boulder up a hill everyday only to have it roll back down. This article is refering to the fact that when the US does something good something else happens to make it go wrong.

    • As a subject, Charles de Gaulle meets all the Aristotelian requirements for the tragic hero: the man who reaches high estate, then falls from it, generally through some inbuilt flaw. The brave soul attempting the definitive biography of such a man faces many problems. First, millions of words have already been written about de Gaulle (even while considerable archival material remains locked up in the family vaults). Second, there were at least four separate de Gaulles: the professional soldier; the military thinker and visionary; the Man of June 1940, rallying point of Free France; and the politician and national leader of the postwar era. To make matters harder, each one of these de Gaulles wore masks of great complexity.
      • Notes/ Paraphrase/ Summary

Charles De Gaulle was a figure head in France during the the 1940's and follows Aristotle's requirments for a tragic hero. Which is a man who reaches high estate, then falls from it, generally through some inbuilt flaw. Like Chris, Charles has a flaw that caused him to loss everything. In Chris's case it lead to his death. Through this article I will be able to see the type of childhood backround that Charles came from and where it lead him and most importantly his flaw that caused him to loss everthing. He may have the same type of personality as Chris which led to both of their ends.
