How I Help My Daughters Learn About Womens Health

I try and do everything I can to teach my daughters about womens health. I feel a responsibility to do that since I am their parent, but unfortunately, I am their only parent. My wife died suddenly and tragically a few years back, leaving me to raise my two daughters alone.

Well, not totally alone. We have a lot of friends and family, and we're quite safe financially, but this happened while my daughters were still in elementary school. Now they're approaching puberty and need to learn a lot of things about their bodies and themselves, and am I really the right choice to teach them all that? I don't want to misguide them into life-long bad habits or ignorance of particular things just because I'm a man.

I've talked to their doctors about this, and they've stepped in quite handily to teach them (and me) a lot. But I haven't stopped there. I also communicate regularly with their health and physical education teachers at school. I also make sure they spend time in their girl scout troop, even though a lot of other girls have "outgrown" it. They always seem happier and a little more confident in their femininity after a weekend out with other girls and women, so I figure something good is going on there.

I personally read as many books as I can. I had no idea there was a whole genre of books for men raising daughters. I can do more than I thought, although there are some subjects and times that my daughters just shut me out. So, I call my sister, and she handles those "emergencies."

I might not have been able to do this without the Internet. I've scouted out hundreds of videos, dozens of websites, and even a forum or two I think are safe for my daughters. I let them spend time there online without me snooping. They have direct access to legitimate medical knowledge and even a place or two to ask experts questions that they would never bring to me.

At the end of the day, we all miss my wife, but I think my daughters might actually end up knowing more about womens health in the long run just because I'm so focused and attentive on it. At this point, I might actually know more about womens health myself than mens health!
