What Are Some Mistakes to Avoid When Buying New Furniture?

Furniture is an investment. It is an expensive purchase, and so it is important to avoid mistakes. Unsurprisingly, many people have the issues when buying furniture. Below, we will discuss some of the main problems people encounter. By reading this article, we hope that you will avoid making some of the common, and more costly, mistakes.

People Forget to Measure the Room and the Furniture
You will find that many retailers have a clause in their purchasing contracts that states that if you buy furniture and it does not fit in the room, it is your responsibility and they will not accept returns. This is because it happens so often, that they simply cannot afford to rectify everybody’s mistakes.

Always measure the room, taking into account other items of furniture, and make sure that the new item will fit – do not forget to account for height. It is especially important to take good measurements when you buy multiple items, for example, as part of a furniture set.

Picture the Item in the Room
Speaking from personal experience here, but the item may look different in the shop, or in the workshop, than it will in your house. We bought a hand-made super king size bed from our carpenter friend. When we went to check on the progress in his workshop, it looked fine. The workshop was very big, and it made the bed look small. When we took it home, it literally took up most of the room. We still love it, but it does not allow for other furniture in the bedroom, except a small wardrobe (although there is plenty of space under the bed, it is about three and a half foot tall, we have to climb up at night!).

Make sure that you scale the furniture to the size of the room and get furniture packages according to the size. Making a floor plan can help you decide.

Avoid Following the Fashions
Many people follow the fashions too much. They end up buying new furniture every other year. This is very expensive and completely unavoidable. To avoid this, choose items that match your personal taste. Furniture that does not conform to fashion will stay in style longer.
