June 17, 2006, Seattle Times, Jonestown: The Life and Death of Peoples Temple's,

7 p.m. — "Jonestown: The Life and Death of Peoples Temple": "We all wanted to go there. It looked like freedom," says a survivor of Jim Jones' Peoples Temple, speaking of the cult's compound in Guyana that would become the site for a 1978 mass suicide. Stanley Nelson's film, which at its end uses eerie footage from the compound (including Jones' crackling voice saying, "If we can't live in peace, let's die in peace"), is meticulous and haunting; the event's unspeakable sadness resonates decades later. A survivor sobs quietly, "And now I can't believe in heaven anymore." 86 minutes. (M.M.)
