BRENDA Spencer, who inspired The Boomtown Rats' hit, I Don't Like Mondays, is seeking parole, 22 years after her crime.

Spencer was 16 on January 29, 1979, when she opened fire with a .22 calibre rifle, a gift from her father, from the family's San Diego, California, house, across the street from the school, killing the principal and the custodian and wounding eight students and a police officer.

But Spencer, serving a 25-years-to-life sentence for her attack at Grover Cleveland Elementary School, is unlikely to be granted parole, because of the nature of the crime, a lack of remorse and recent erratic behaviour, in prison, said Richard Sachs, a San Diego County deputy district attorney, who will argue for keeping her behind bars.
