November 15, 1998, San Francisco Chronicle, Here's a look at the Bay Area's past

Nov. 14, 1978: In the wake of supervisor Dan White's resignation for financial reasons, Supervisor Carol Ruth Silver has introduced a measure asking that supervisors and their families be given health benefits and that wages be raised to match average of the pay for comparable work. Silver, Harvey Milk and Gordon Lau say they suffer financially making $9,600 a year.

Nov. 15: A Bay Area delegation of concerned relatives seeking reunions with 20 family members now living in Jonestown, the jungle outpost of the People's Temple, are told they are not welcome. While they were being turned away, Congressman Leo J. Ryan receives a tentative invitation to visit the communal project founded by the Rev. Jim Jones.

Nov. 16: Dan White declares he has changed his mind and now wants to return to his seat on the Board of Supervisors. Chief Deputy City Attorney Tom Toomey said it will take a week to decide whether White is legally allowed to retract his resignation.

November 17: A small group of visitors led by Congressman Leo J. Ryan finally makes it to Jonestown aboard a chartered plane. Ryan, who said he wanted to see whether the People's Temple commune was a "jail" for 1,200 Americans, begins a series of meetings with individual settlers and the Rev. Jim Jones.

Nov. 18: The U.S. State Department reports that as many as 13 people were shot as they waited to board an airplane near the Peoples Temple compound at Jonestown. Early reports indicate Rep. Leo Ryan and a four-person NBC crew were fatally wounded.

Nov. 20: The Guyana Ministry of Information reports that military troops airlifted into Jonestown found 300 to 400 dead bodies at the jungle settlement.
