THIS is America's worst college shooting in a grim history of gun violence.

OCTOBER 2006: Truck driver Charles Carl Roberts, 32, killed five Amish girls and wounded seven in Pennsylvania.

APRIL 1999: Teenagers Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold shot dead 12 students and a teacher and wounded 24 in the Columbine High School massacre. The pair then turned the guns on themselves at the school in Littleton, Colorado.

MARCH 1998: Four students were killed and 10 wounded outside Westside Middle School in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Mitchell Johnson, 13, and Andrew Golden, 11, fired from nearby woods.

JANUARY 1979: Brenda Spencer, 16, opened fire with her father's rifle on children and staff at the Grover Elementary school opposite her house in San Diego, California. Two killed, seven wounded. When asked why, she said: "I don't like Mondays," inspiring the Boomtown Rats song.

AUGUST 1966: Charles Whitman, 25, scaled the 27-storey tower of a Texas university with two sniper rifles, handguns and a shotgun. He killed 14 and injured 31 before a police marksman shot him dead. The depressive had earlier knifed to death his mother and wife.

MAY 1927: School governor Andrew Kehoe killed 45 in a string of bombings in Bath Township, Michigan. Most were children aged eight to 14. Fifty-eight were injured. Kehoe, who earlier killed his wife, died in the last of the bombs. He had flipped in fury over a buildings tax.
