On July 26, 1953, Arizona authorities raided Short Creek, a small polygamist community on the Utah-Arizona border, and hundreds of people were taken into custody. Arizona Governor John Howard Pyle accused the people of the town of insurrection and called the children in Short Creek "the product and victim of the foulest conspiracy you could possibly imagine." Dozens of reporters were invited along to witness the raid and most of the press about it was negatively reflected on Arizona’s actions. These photos are from that raid.
