Brenda Spencer

A WOMAN who killed two people and wounded nine others in the first high-profile school shooting in the United States is seeking to return to a society where the crime she committed 22 years ago has become disturbingly frequent.

Brenda Spencer is expected to ask for her freedom when she attends a parole hearing today at a state prison where she is serving 25 years to life for her attack on children and adults gathering for the start of classes at San Diego's Grover Cleveland elementary school in 1979.

She is unlikely to be granted parole because of the nature of the crime, a lack of demonstrated remorse and some recent erratic behavior in prison, said Richard Sachs, a San Diego County deputy district attorney.

Despite the long odds against her release, prosecutors prepared arguments for the parole board. Cam Miller, who was nine when Spencer shot him, will testify.

Kathe Wragg, the wife of principal Burton Wragg, who died in the attack, taped a video statement opposing freedom for the convicted sniper.

Even if the three-member board sets a parole date, the governor would have 90 days to review the decision and could overturn it.

Spencer is often remembered for her response to a reporter who phoned her during a six-and-a-half hour standoff with police and asked why she opened fire. "I don't like Mondays," she responded. "This livens up the day." The line inspired a song by the Boomtown Rats.

Spencer was 16 on January 29, 1979, when she opened fire with a .22-calibre rifle, a gift from her father, from her house across the street from the school. She killed principal Wragg, custodian Mike Suchar and wounded eight students and a police officer.

She pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder and nine of assault with a deadly weapon.
