Brenda Spencer

April 19, 2001, The Mirror (London) Rats Killer To Stay In Prison, 314 words

THE schoolgirl whose playground shooting spree inspired the Boomtown Rats' hit I Don't Like Mondays has lost her bid to be freed from jail.

Brenda Spencer was just 16 when she killed two people and injured nine with a sniper's rifle in 1979 at a school in San Diego, California.

Asked why she did it, she told detectives: "I don't like Mondays."

She was sentenced to 25 years to life and has been denied parole three times.

Spencer, now 38, told a parole board in California she felt guilty every time she heard of a school shooting.

She said: "What if they got the idea from what I did?"

Spencer fired on the yard from her house opposite Cleveland Elementary School. She killed headmaster Burton Wragg and custodian Michael Suchar.

Policeman Robert Robb was hit in the neck and eight children were injured.

Spencer said her father's cruelty sparked the shooting. She asked him for a radio for Christmas but instead he bought her a gun.
