Brenda Spencer, who shot and killed two people and wounded others three decades ago in one of the nation's first schoolyard shootings, was again denied parole Thursday.

She will not be eligible for a new parole hearing for 10 years.

Spencer, now 47, was convicted of several counts of first-degree murder and assault for the 1979 shootings at Cleveland Elementary School in San Carlos and later sentenced to 25 years to life in prison.

She was 16 years old on Jan. 29, 1979, when she repeatedly fired a .22-caliber rifle at children from her home across the street from the school. The rifle was a Christmas gift from her father.

Principal Burton Wragg, 53, and custodian Michael Suchar, 56, were killed.

Police Officer Robert Robb was shot in the neck as he, Wragg and Suchar tried to help the children. Eight students ranging in age from 7 to 10 were wounded.

When asked by a reporter later why she had committed the shootings, Spencer responded, “I don't like Mondays. This livens up the day.”

Spencer is being held at the California Institution for Women in Corona, where the parole hearing took place. This is the fifth time Spencer has appeared before a parole board asking to be considered for release.
