How Obama Dropped the Ball on His Social Media Strategy
"One of the puzzling things is how Obama used social media to his advantage during the campaign but has failed to use it successfully now... It’s like they read Chapter 1 of ‘How to Develop a Social Media Strategy’, but never finished the rest of the book."
apophenia: Teens Don't Tweet... Or Do They?
Yesterday, Mashable reported Nielsen's latest Twitter numbers with the headline Stats Confirm It: Teens Don't Tweet. This gained traction on Twitter turning into the trending topic "teens don't tweet" which was primarily kept in play all day yesterday with teens responding to the TT by saying "I'm a teen" or the equivalent of "you're all idiots... what am I, mashed potatoes?"
I want to unpack some of what played out because I'm astonished by the misinterpretations in every which direction.
Twitter’s Internal Strategy Laid Bare: To Be “The Pulse Of The Planet”
On Tuesday evening more than 300 confidential Twitter documents and screenshots landed in our inbox. We said we were going to post a handful of them only, and we’ve spent much of the last 36 hours talking directly to Twitter about the right way to go about doing that. We’ll have more to say on that process in a couple of days.
February Roundup: Social Networking Sites For Kids | Social Media Mom
Social networking is definitely not limited to adults. As you can see, there is a wide variety of sites that are geared towards our youth and while the idea is to get kids participation by playing games, it is already setting the foundation for the next generation of social media users.
Over a third of Facebook users now 35+, use by seniors at record levels

Why Content and Social Media are a Powerful Match — Copyblogger
Creating stellar content for your marketing is great. But great content doesn’t (quite) distribute itself. It needs vehicles for people to pass it along, discuss its merits, argue over its controversies, blog it, mash it, tweet it and even scrape it. Which is, of course, where social media comes in.
apophenia: "Living and Learning with Social Media"
Many American youth are embracing a wide array of social media as part of their everyday lives. From social network sites and texting to blogs and wikis, many youth are leveraging the power of social media to create, communicate, share, and learn. In this talk, I will use social network sites as a case study to examine critical shifts that are underway as a result of social media. I look at how inequality is perpetuated through these systems and the challenges that educators face when trying to incorporate these systems into the classroom. Finally, I conclude by discussing implications for educators.
Scobleizer: Technology, innovation, and geek enthusiasm » Blog Archive Why Facebook has never listened and why it definitely won’t start now «
Today, over on Techmeme, I see that the latest uproar is over Facebook’s new design and how Mark Zuckerberg is telling people that he won’t listen to customers. Or something like that.
Before we get deeper into this, remember that Facebook has always pissed off its users. First, you’ve gotta realize that in Facebook’s life it will go through at least seven phases. We are moving from phase four to phase five right now. In each phase change people have gotten pissed off.
The New Atlantis » Virtual Friendship and the New Narcissism
It's an interesting article about Facebook, and something that I am fascinated about - the effect of technology on the psyche... Especially as I find myself getting more and more hooked to this. This writer also has a piece on Tivo and Playstation, etc., turning kids into monstrous narcissists too. Bring on Gen N.
