Confederation of Open Access Repositories
DRIVER is in phase II and is a European initiative for digital resources. COAT was launched during International Open Access Week in October 2009 and aims to "promote greater visiblity and application of research through global networks - interesting that they're going to start by charging for membership. They are trying to create a sustainable model for the network.

COAR will be launched during Open Access Week 2009. If you are interested in participating in COAR, a nominal membership subscription of €100 is envisaged in the first year, with banded subscriptions thereafter

Online Education Beats the Classroom - NYTimes.com
a new study of studies by SRI International that looked at " the comparative research on online versus traditional classroom teaching from 1996 to 2008".and found that most students performed better from online instruction - caveat: they didn't just put materials online, they used web videos, etc.
Need to review the actual study as it seems difficult to believe you could find well-designed studies to compare effectively

Is Happiness Contagious? - Freakonomics Blog - NYTimes.com
-
There are (at least) three reasons why happiness is correlated within social networks.
-
Interestingly, the same issue of the BMJ contained a very careful article by Ethan Cohen-Cole and Jason Fletcher making precisely this point. They employ a pretty cheeky research strategy: if you want to show that a research design is silly, show that it leads to silly conclusions.

Dynamic spread of happiness in a large social network: longitudinal analysis over 20 years in the Framingham Heart Study -- Fowler and Christakis 337: a2338 -- BMJ
So if it becomes a collective phenomenon does that mean the government will tax it, regulate it, encourage it through social engineering techniques?
-
People’s happiness depends on the happiness of others with whom they are connected. This provides further justification for seeing happiness, like health, as a collective phenomenon
Collaborating with Google Docs and Spreadsheets – edtech VISION
Great example of a well-thought out research project where students collected data and photos, added research, collected it in GoogleDocs and then later used the googleDoc to collect addresses, develop letters to representatives, etc. Nice use of tool and engaging students in a longer term research, collaborative project
